University of Helsinki Theoretical and Computational Methods Master’s Thesis Guide 2026-2027

University of Helsinki-এর Master’s Programme in Theoretical and Computational Methods (TCM) মূলত mathematical modelling, theoretical reasoning, numerical analysis এবং computation-এর ওপর গড়ে উঠেছে। Programme-টি physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science ও data science-এর বিভিন্ন অংশ combine করার সুযোগ দেয়। এই flexibility thesis planning-এর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বৈশিষ্ট্য।

এই guide শুধুমাত্র thesis process নিয়ে। Admission, tuition fee, scholarship, eligibility বা language-test requirement intentionally include করা হয়নি।

বর্তমান TCM degree structure

Degree-এর মোট scope 120 ECTS এবং target duration 2 academic years। Current programme page অনুযায়ী 90 ECTS advanced studies-এর মধ্যে 30 ECTS Master’s thesis রয়েছে, আর 30 ECTS other studies থাকে।

TCM-এর course package অনেক বিস্তৃত। Physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science এবং data science-এর মধ্যে student নিজের coherent study path বানাতে পারে। Academic mentor study plan finalise ও monitor করতে সাহায্য করেন।

এই বিভিন্ন course package বা example study path mandatory thesis-method template নয়। Thesis method research question, scientific problem, available data/material এবং supervisor-এর সঙ্গে agreement অনুযায়ী নির্ধারণ করতে হবে।

30 ECTS TCM thesis কী demonstrate করবে

Current programme guidance অনুযায়ী thesis-এর scope 30 ECTS। Thesis-এ student-কে দেখাতে হবে:

• scientific thinking;
• scientific method-এর command;
• thesis topic-এর mastery; এবং
• scientific communication skill।

TCM thesis অনেক সময় Faculty of Science-এর research group-এর মধ্যে করা হয়। Company বা research organisation-এর সঙ্গে cooperation করেও thesis project করা সম্ভব। তবে larger project-এর অংশ হলেও নিজের contribution, reasoning, analysis এবং written thesis independently assessable হতে হবে।

Research problem থেকে thesis design করুন

TCM-এর broad nature-এর কারণে thesis শুরু করা উচিত একটি পরিষ্কার scientific problem দিয়ে, কোনো borrowed template দিয়ে নয়। Project অনুযায়ী analytical derivation, mathematical proof, numerical simulation, algorithm design, computational experiment, high-performance computing, data analysis বা একাধিক approach একসাথে প্রয়োজন হতে পারে।

একটি practical sequence হতে পারে:

1. research area এবং সম্ভাব্য supervisor/research group নির্ধারণ;
2. 30 ECTS-এর মধ্যে realistic research question তৈরি;
3. theoretical framework, data/material এবং computational/analytical approach ঠিক করা;
4. thesis plan ও supervision arrangement তৈরি;
5. research এবং writing parallelভাবে করা;
6. model, argument, code বা analysis research question-এর বিরুদ্ধে test করা;
7. supervisor feedback নিয়ে final E-thesis version তৈরি করা।

এটি planning advice, official mandatory chapter structure নয়।

Thesis plan দরকার

University-এর current general thesis rule অনুযায়ী thesis project শুরুর আগে বা initial stage-এ thesis plan তৈরি করতে হবে। Programme-এর নির্ধারিত পদ্ধতিতে plan approve হবে এবং supervisor বা supervisors-এর নাম থাকতে হবে।

TCM-এর মতো flexible programme-এ এই step বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ multidisciplinary topic খুব সহজে 30 ECTS-এর তুলনায় অতিরিক্ত broad হয়ে যেতে পারে। Research question, scope, method, supervision এবং timetable শুরুতেই clearly define করুন।

অন্য programme-এর page count copy করবেন না

Current TCM sources verified for this guide একটি universal TCM thesis page range দেয় না।

তাই Computer Science-এর typical 40-50 pages, Mathematics and Statistics-এর 30-50 pages বা অন্য faculty/programme-এর page target TCM-এ automatically apply করবেন না।

TCM thesis-এর প্রয়োজনীয় length scientific argument ও project-এর nature-এর ওপর নির্ভর করবে। Current supervisor এবং programme instruction-ই controlling guidance।

Language, citation এবং presentation

TCM multilingual programme। Instruction English-এ হয়, এবং current guidance অনুযায়ী course/assignment Finnish বা Swedish-এও করা যেতে পারে। Thesis language-এর ক্ষেত্রে নিজের degree-language এবং current University rules follow করতে হবে।

Verified current TCM sources কোনো একক universal APA, IEEE, Chicago বা অন্য citation style prescribe করে না। Referencing, notation, code presentation, appendix এবং layout-এর জন্য programme, research field এবং supervisor-এর current instruction follow করুন।

Introduction/research question, background, methods/theoretical framework, results, discussion এবং conclusion একটি useful planning framework হতে পারে, কিন্তু এটি official mandatory TCM chapter template নয়।

Research group বা external collaboration-এর মধ্যে নিজের thesis boundary

TCM-এর একটি বড় সুবিধা হলো student current research group-এর সঙ্গে কাজ করতে পারে। কিন্তু research group-এর larger project, shared codebase, simulation environment বা common dataset ব্যবহার করলেও Master’s thesis-এর নিজের research question এবং independently assessable contribution clear থাকতে হবে। Supervisor-এর সঙ্গে শুরুতেই ঠিক করুন কোন অংশ group-এর shared infrastructure এবং কোন analysis, modelling, implementation, interpretation বা scientific argument আপনার নিজের thesis contribution।

Company বা research organisation-এর সঙ্গে cooperation থাকলেও একই principle apply করে। Project-এর practical objective এবং academic thesis-এর scientific objective এক জিনিস নাও হতে পারে। তাই thesis plan-এ research question, expected academic contribution, data/access limitation, confidentiality concern থাকলে তার handling, এবং supervisor-এর সঙ্গে agreed deliverable পরিষ্কার রাখা ভালো। এই planning advice-এর formal details current programme ও supervisor instruction অনুযায়ী finalise করতে হবে।

30 ECTS scope control করার practical উপায়

TCM topic খুব দ্রুত বড় হয়ে যেতে পারে, বিশেষ করে যখন mathematical theory, computation এবং domain science একসাথে আসে। 30 ECTS scope ধরে রাখতে research question-কে এমনভাবে narrow করুন যাতে একটি coherent scientific argument complete করা যায়। সব possible model, dataset বা algorithm explore করার চেষ্টা না করে primary question এবং essential validation আগে নির্ধারণ করুন।

Thesis plan review করার সময় নিজেকে কয়েকটি প্রশ্ন করুন: project-এর central claim কী, কোন method সত্যিই প্রয়োজন, কোন result ছাড়া research question answer হবে না, এবং কোন interesting extension thesis-এর বাইরে future work হিসেবে রাখা যায়? এই distinction project delay এবং unnecessary complexity কমাতে সাহায্য করে।

E-thesis submission

TCM current E-thesis system ব্যবহার করে। Submission-এর আগে Sisu-তে thesis ও maturity test-এর registration করতে হয়। Student ও supervisor final version ready মনে করলে deadline-এর মধ্যে E-thesis-এ submit করতে হবে।

Submit করার পর thesis আর edit করা যায় না। তাই final PDF, equation, figure, table, code reference, bibliography, appendix, abstract এবং metadata আগে thoroughly check করতে হবে।

Supervisor examiner information Kumpula Student Services-এ পাঠান এবং thesis assessment-এর জন্য examiners-এর কাছে যায়।

Examiner এবং grading

TCM-specific current rule অনুযায়ী দুইজন examiner thesis assess করেন। একজন qualifying Faculty of Science academic এবং অন্যজন কমপক্ষে doctoral degree holder হতে হবে। Supervisor অনেক ক্ষেত্রে একজন examiner হতে পারেন।

Thesis 0-5 scale-এ TCM evaluation matrix ব্যবহার করে grade করা হয়। Extreme grade 0, 1 এবং 5 clearly justify করতে হয়।

Assessment শেষ হলে Student Services thesis Dean-এর decision-এর জন্য পাঠায় এবং student grade proposal জানতে পারে। Final approval Dean দেন।

Maturity test

TCM-এ একজন examiner thesis abstract-কে maturity test হিসেবে accept করেন। এটি 0 ECTS এবং pass/fail attainment। Required language student-এর previous education ও degree-language situation-এর ওপর নির্ভর করে।

Maturity test-এ AI ব্যবহার করা কখনোই allowed নয়।

Thesis-এ AI use

University of Helsinki-এর current policy অনুযায়ী large language model learning বা writing support-এ সাধারণভাবে ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে, তবে teacher, faculty বা programme restriction দিতে পারে। Use disclosure করতে হবে এবং submitted content-এর accuracy ও responsibility student-এরই থাকে।

TCM thesis-এ AI student-এর scientific reasoning, derivation, modelling decision, code verification বা interpretation replace করতে পারে না। Permitted use থাকলে current University/programme rule অনুযায়ী report করুন।

Assessment-এর আগে final review

TCM-specific assessment 0-5 scale এবং programme evaluation matrix ব্যবহার করে। তাই final submission-এর আগে শুধু language editing নয়, scientific coherence-ও check করুন: research question introduction থেকে conclusion পর্যন্ত consistent কি না, method justify করা হয়েছে কি না, result reproducible বা sufficiently explained কি না, limitation openly discussed কি না এবং আপনার independent contribution examiner সহজে identify করতে পারবেন কি না। Extreme grade 0, 1 বা 5-এর জন্য clear justification প্রয়োজন হওয়ায় assessment matrix-এর dimensions আগে থেকে জানা final revision-এ useful হতে পারে।

Faculty of Science 2026-2027 deadline

Current Faculty of Science schedule-এ submission round রয়েছে 3 September, 8 October, 12 November, 17 December 2026; 21 January, 25 February, 11 March, 8 April, 7 May, 20 May এবং 24 June 2027।

Submission deadline-এর দিনে 23:59 Finnish time-এর মধ্যে final thesis submit করতে হবে। July-এ thesis assess করা হয় না এবং সাধারণভাবে supervision/feedback দেওয়া হয় না, যদি programme-specific exception না থাকে।

Graduation date important হলে শুধু submission date নয়, examiner assessment এবং Dean decision date ধরে backward planning করুন।

Final checklist

Submission-এর আগে নিশ্চিত করুন:

• research question 30 ECTS-এর জন্য realistic;
• thesis plan এবং supervisor current process অনুযায়ী agreed;
• method research question-এর সঙ্গে aligned;
• research group/company project-এর মধ্যে নিজের contribution clear;
• অন্য programme-এর page-count বা citation rule copy করা হয়নি;
• equation, code, numerical experiment, data এবং figure যথেষ্টভাবে explain করা হয়েছে;
• AI use permitted এবং properly disclosed;
• maturity test AI ছাড়া completed;
• final E-thesis file thoroughly checked; এবং
• correct Faculty of Science deadline selected।

TCM thesis-এর quality fixed page number দিয়ে নির্ধারিত হয় না। Clear scientific question, justified theoretical/computational method, careful analysis এবং independently assessable argument-ই মূল বিষয়।
