University of Helsinki MAREEES Master’s Thesis Guide 2026-2027

University of Helsinki-এর Master’s Programme in Russian, Eurasian, and Eastern European Studies, সংক্ষেপে MAREEES, একটি 120 ECTS-এর দুই বছরের Master of Arts programme। Programme-টি পুরোপুরি English-এ taught হয় এবং Aleksanteri Institute-এর মাধ্যমে coordinated। Russia, Eastern Europe, Caucasus এবং Central Asia নিয়ে humanities ও social-science perspective একসঙ্গে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Thesis planning-এর ক্ষেত্রে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় হলো MAREEES-এর জন্য কোন Faculty rule প্রযোজ্য তা ঠিকভাবে বোঝা। University-এর current central thesis page-এ relevant section এখনও পুরোনো “Faculty of Arts” heading ব্যবহার করছে, কিন্তু সেখানে MAREEES explicitly listed। অন্যদিকে current University organisation page-এ Aleksanteri Institute-কে Faculty of Humanities-এর অধীনে দেখানো হয়েছে। তাই এই guide-এ current programme information-এর সঙ্গে সেই humanities thesis rules ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে যেগুলো MAREEES-কে explicitly cover করে।

Current MAREEES degree structure

বর্তমান programme structure মোট 120 ECTS:

• Core studies: 15 ECTS
• Global processes and regional dynamics: 15 ECTS
• Global challenges: 20 ECTS
• Professional orientation: 5 ECTS
• MA thesis seminar: 5 ECTS
• Master’s thesis: 30 ECTS
• Optional studies: 30 ECTS

Programme-টি interdisciplinary। Humanities, social sciences এবং area studies-এর theory ও method এখানে একসঙ্গে কাজ করে। এর মানে সব MAREEES thesis-এর জন্য একটি single compulsory research method নেই।

আপনার method research question, source material, theoretical approach এবং disciplinary orientation অনুযায়ী নির্বাচন করতে হবে। Political institution নিয়ে thesis-এর design যেমন হতে পারে, identity, media, migration, historical change, environment বা memory নিয়ে project-এর design তেমন নাও হতে পারে।

Thesis seminar-এ project বাস্তব রূপ নেয়

Current 5 ECTS MA thesis seminar শুধু একটি accompanying course নয়। Programme-এর current structure page বলছে, seminar-এ students thesis plan লেখে এবং thesis supervisors assigned হয়।

এই stage-এ broad regional interest-কে manageable research project-এ পরিণত করা উচিত। একটি ভালো thesis plan-এ পরিষ্কারভাবে থাকা দরকার:

1. আপনি কোন research problem নিয়ে কাজ করছেন;
2. সমস্যা academicভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কেন;
3. research question কী;
4. কোন material বা sources analyse করবেন;
5. কোন method বা analytical approach সবচেয়ে উপযুক্ত;
6. কোন theory বা concept প্রয়োজন;
7. নির্ধারিত সময়ের মধ্যে project কীভাবে complete হবে।

MAREEES thesis process Aleksanteri Institute-এর research community-এর সঙ্গেও connected। Current programme information অনুযায়ী second-year autumn-এ students international Aleksanteri Conference-এ research plan poster হিসেবে present করতে পারে। Autumn 2026 welcome page-ও confirm করে যে এই poster session thesis process-এর অংশ হিসেবে চলমান।

Poster presentation একটি practical test হিসেবেও কাজে দেয়। যদি research question, material এবং method সংক্ষিপ্তভাবে পরিষ্কার করে বোঝানো কঠিন হয়, তাহলে project এখনও অতিরিক্ত broad হতে পারে।

Thesis-এ কী demonstrate করতে হবে

Current MAREEES thesis learning outcomes thesis planning-এর জন্য খুব useful checklist। Thesis-এর মাধ্যমে student-এর সক্ষমতা দেখাতে হবে:

• relevant এবং interesting research question formulate করতে;
• coherent research design তৈরি করতে;
• research materials analyse এবং produce করতে; এবং
• scientific research report লিখতে।

শুধু sophisticated topic যথেষ্ট নয়। Research question, literature, theory, material, method, analysis এবং conclusion একে অন্যের সঙ্গে logically aligned হতে হবে।

Aleksanteri Institute-এর research environment security and war, politics and institutions, identity and migration, environment and climate, knowledge production এবং information society-এর মতো বিষয়ে কাজ করে। এগুলো potential intellectual context, কিন্তু compulsory thesis topic নয়।

PSP teacher এবং thesis supervisor একই role নয়

Current MAREEES PSP guidance অনুযায়ী প্রত্যেক student-এর একটি PSP teacher থাকে। PSP teacher overall degree planning এবং progress-এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত।

Thesis supervisor আলাদা role। Current guidance বলছে thesis topic অনুযায়ী supervisor selected হয়, সাধারণত PSP teacher এবং thesis supervisor একই ব্যক্তি নয়, এবং thesis supervisor Aleksanteri Institute-এর faculty member।

কোন প্রশ্ন কাকে করা হবে সেটাও তাই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Degree structure, study progress বা overall study plan নিয়ে প্রশ্ন PSP teacher-এর জন্য উপযুক্ত হতে পারে। Research question, theory, material, method, analysis বা thesis argument নিয়ে guidance thesis supervisor এবং seminar-এর সঙ্গে করতে হবে।

MAREEES thesis কত লম্বা হওয়া উচিত?

MAREEES-কে explicitly list করা humanities Faculty thesis instructions অনুযায়ী সাধারণ Master’s thesis-এর usual length 40-60 pages, possible appendices বাদ দিয়ে।

এটি page framework। Current official source কোনো universal MAREEES word count দেয় না। তাই fixed word number তৈরি করে দেওয়া ঠিক হবে না।

দুই student jointly thesis লিখলে normal length 60-80 pages। Introduction এবং abstract-এ প্রত্যেক writer-এর individual contribution specify করতে হবে।

Thesis কোনো larger research project-এর অংশ হিসেবেও লেখা যেতে পারে। কিন্তু সে ক্ষেত্রেও প্রত্যেক student নিজস্ব thesis examination-এর জন্য submit করবে এবং প্রতিটি thesis আলাদাভাবে graded হবে।

Fixed chapter template-এর বদলে alignment গুরুত্বপূর্ণ

Current official material একটিমাত্র compulsory MAREEES chapter structure নির্ধারণ করে না। Practical structure হিসেবে introduction, scholarly framework বা literature review, data বা source material, methodology, analysis, discussion এবং conclusions ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে। কিন্তু final architecture research design এবং seminar/supervisor instruction অনুযায়ী হওয়া উচিত।

একটি useful alignment check:

• Introduction কি manageable research problem define করছে?
• Literature review কি শুধু summary না হয়ে academic conversation establish করছে?
• Theory কি research question answer করতে সাহায্য করছে?
• Material কি intended claims support করার জন্য appropriate?
• Method কি explain করছে material কীভাবে analyse হবে?
• Analysis কি শুধু description না করে research question answer করছে?
• Conclusion কি analysis থেকে logically follow করছে?

Interdisciplinary programme-এ এই alignment বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Multiple disciplinary perspective thesis-কে শক্তিশালী করতে পারে, কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে connection explicit হতে হবে।

MAREEES-এ research method

MAREEES humanities, social sciences এবং area studies combine করে বলে methods অনেক ধরনের হতে পারে। Project অনুযায়ী documents, interviews, media material, policy texts, archives, discourse, historical sources, comparative cases, qualitative বা quantitative data এবং অন্যান্য research materials ব্যবহার হতে পারে।

Current programme কোনো single empirical method compulsory করেনি। অন্য thesis-এ কোনো method popular বলে সেটি automatically আপনার project-এর জন্য সঠিক নয়। প্রথমে research question ঠিক করুন, এরপর কোন evidence সেই question answer করতে পারবে তা নির্ধারণ করুন।

Citation style-এর ক্ষেত্রেও একই সতর্কতা দরকার। Current official source সব MAREEES thesis-এর জন্য একটিমাত্র named citation style establish করে না। Seminar, supervisor বা applicable disciplinary instruction যে referencing system require করে সেটি consistently ব্যবহার করুন।

Thesis plan এবং preliminary examination

Humanities Faculty instructions অনুযায়ী thesis project শুরু করার আগে, অথবা initial stage-এ সর্বশেষ, thesis plan draft করতে হবে। Degree programme plan discuss এবং approve করবে এবং supervisor বা supervisors plan-এ identify করতে হবে।

Faculty formal submission-এর আগে preliminary examination recommend করে। Supervisor এই preliminary examination করেন। Teaching period-এ supervisor feedback দেওয়ার জন্য চার সপ্তাহ সময় পান। Preliminary examination-এর পরে thesis supplement এবং revise করা যায়।

এই stage এবং final E-thesis submission-এর পার্থক্য খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Substantive correction preliminary stage-এই করা উচিত। Formal E-thesis submission-কে আরেকটি draft checkpoint হিসেবে treat করা উচিত নয়।

E-thesis-এ formal submission

Completed thesis PDF হিসেবে E-thesis-এ electronically submit করতে হয়।

Final version assessment-এর জন্য submit করার পরে thesis আর edit করা যায় না। Final submit করার আগে অন্তত এগুলো check করুন:

• title এবং author information;
• final PDF;
• abstract;
• table of contents এবং page numbering;
• figures, tables এবং appendices;
• in-text citations এবং reference list;
• supervisor information;
• publication permission এবং প্রয়োজন হলে embargo request।

E-thesis assessment workflow চালায় এবং approved thesis publication decision অনুযায়ী Helda repository-তে transfer করে।

Examiners এবং grading

MAREEES humanities Faculty regime অনুযায়ী formal submission-এর পরে দুইজন examiner appointed হয়। তাদের একজন thesis supervisor। Normally দুজনেরই doctoral degree থাকতে হবে, যদিও rare case-এ head of degree programme exception অনুমোদন করতে পারেন।

Thesis 0-5 scale-এ graded হয়।

এখানে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Faculty-specific boundary আছে। Current central thesis instructions বলছে humanities Faculty assessment criteria ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং point 7 assessed হয় না। তাই Faculty of Social Sciences-এর post-1-August-2026 seven-area assessment model MAREEES-এর জন্য copy করা যাবে না।

Final grade Dean decide করেন। দুই original examiner grade নিয়ে agree না করলে third examiner appointed হতে পারেন। তিনজনের মধ্যে দুইজন একই grade দিলে সেটিই final proposal হয়; তিনজন আলাদা grade দিলে Faculty-এর stated averaging এবং rounding rule apply হয়।

Abstract এবং maturity test

Master’s thesis-এ thesis-এর language-এ abstract থাকতে হবে। Humanities Faculty instructions অনুযায়ী এই abstract-ই Master’s maturity test হিসেবে কাজ করে।

University-wide rule অনুযায়ী maturity test separate 0 ECTS attainment এবং pass/fail graded। কোন language-এ maturity test করতে হবে তা previous education, secondary-education language এবং আগের degree-তে required language competence already demonstrated হয়েছে কি না তার ওপর নির্ভর করে।

MAREEES পুরো English-এ taught হয় বলে automatically ধরে নেওয়া উচিত নয় যে প্রত্যেক student-এর জন্য English abstract alone সব language requirement fulfil করবে। Current maturity-test language instruction check করা দরকার।

AI use

University of Helsinki learning ও writing support হিসেবে large language model ব্যবহার সাধারণভাবে allow করে, যদি teacher বা programme specific restriction না দেয়। কিন্তু submitted work-এর accuracy এবং integrity-এর দায়িত্ব student-এর। AI use applicable instruction অনুযায়ী report করতে হবে।

একটি rule absolute: maturity test-এ AI ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।

Thesis-এর অন্য অংশে AI ব্যবহার করলে University rule এবং supervisor/seminar instruction follow করুন। Generated output-কে evidence হিসেবে treat করবেন না এবং factual, bibliographic বা analytical claim independently verify করুন।

Thesis public document, confidentiality এবং embargo

Master’s thesis public document। তাই confidential information thesis, public appendix বা abstract-এ include করা যাবে না।

E-thesis submission-এর সময় publication decision দিতে হয়। Open publication permission দিলে approved thesis Helda-তে publish হতে পারে। Abstract এবং descriptive metadata public থাকে।

Publication delay দরকার হলে embargo request E-thesis submission-এর সময়ই করতে হয়। Embargo open publication delay করে, কিন্তু approved thesis-কে secret document বানায় না।

2026-2027 submission timetable

10 March 2026-এর Rector’s Decision অনুযায়ী Faculty of Humanities group-এর 2026-2027 timetable:

Deadline-এর দিন 23:59 Finnish time-এর মধ্যে completed thesis submit করতে হবে। Rector’s Decision আরও বলে July-তে thesis assess করা হয় না এবং faculty/programme specifically require না করলে July-তে supervision বা feedback দেওয়া হয় না।

তাই শুধু submission date দেখে plan করলে হবে না। Desired Dean decision date থেকে backward planning করুন এবং supervisor feedback, preliminary examination, final revision, PDF preparation, abstract check এবং E-thesis metadata-এর জন্য যথেষ্ট সময় রাখুন।

একটি practical MAREEES thesis workflow

একটি reliable sequence হতে পারে:

1. Focused regional এবং scholarly problem define করুন।
2. Problem-কে answerable research question-এ convert করুন।
3. Thesis seminar-এ feasibility discuss করুন।
4. Formal thesis plan লিখুন।
5. Thesis supervisor confirm করুন।
6. Theory, literature, material এবং method-কে এক research design হিসেবে align করুন।
7. Seminar বা poster process-এর মাধ্যমে project clearly explain করতে পারেন কি না test করুন।
8. Material systematically এবং ethically collect/prepare/analyse করুন।
9. Generic template নয়, research question-এর logic অনুযায়ী thesis draft করুন।
10. Supervisor এবং seminar feedback ব্যবহার করে argument refine করুন।
11. Meaningful revision-এর সময় রেখে preliminary examination complete করুন।
12. 40-60 page framework, abstract, references, appendices এবং final PDF check করুন।
13. Relevant submission deadline confirm করুন।
14. E-thesis-এ final file তখনই submit করুন যখন সেটি সত্যিই final।

MAREEES-এ strongest thesis সবচেয়ে বড় geographical area cover করে এমন thesis নয়। Strong thesis হলো যেখানে manageable question, appropriate evidence, clear analytical approach এবং defensible argument programme-এর interdisciplinary research environment এবং Faculty of Humanities thesis rules-এর মধ্যে coherentভাবে fit করে।
