University of Helsinki Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System Sciences Master’s Thesis Guide 2026-2027

University of Helsinki-এর Master’s Programme in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System Sciences হলো atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere এবং wider Earth-climate system নিয়ে 120 ECTS, দুই বছরের একটি Master’s programme। Programme-এর Master’s thesis 30 ECTS এবং এটি degree-এর culminating independent research project। অনেক thesis programme-এর active research environment, বিশেষ করে Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research বা INAR-এর research group-এর সঙ্গে connected হয়।

এই guide 25 August 2026 পর্যন্ত verified official University material-এর ওপর based। এটি thesis guide, admissions guide নয়। Admission eligibility, tuition, scholarship, language-test threshold এবং application deadline intentionally article-এর বাইরে রাখা হয়েছে।

Programme-এর নাম 2026-এ পরিবর্তিত হয়েছে

এই programme-এর documentation বুঝতে naming transition খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Current official name হলো Master’s Programme in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System Sciences। আগে programme-এর নাম ছিল Master’s Programme in Atmospheric Sciences, abbreviation ATM-MP।

Current programme webpages নতুন নাম ব্যবহার করছে, কিন্তু University-এর কিছু current thesis assessment এবং administrative instruction এখনও ATM-MP বা Master's Programme in Atmospheric Sciences label ব্যবহার করে। Current official sources old এবং new name-এর continuity স্পষ্টভাবে establish করে, তাই current ATM-MP thesis-assessment instruction renamed programme-এর জন্য relevant।

তবে এর মানে এই নয় যে যেকোনো পুরোনো Atmospheric Sciences document automatically 2026-2027 thesis-এর rule হয়ে যাবে। Safe approach হলো:

• current degree এবং track structure-এর জন্য 2026-2030 curriculum follow করা;
• current University assessment/E-thesis page ATM-MP label ব্যবহার করলেও current হলে সেটি follow করা; এবং
• pre-2026 track list-কে current structure হিসেবে ব্যবহার না করা, transition student-এর জন্য rule explicitly preserved থাকলে শুধু সেই context-এ ব্যবহার করা।

Degree structure এবং language

Degree-এর মোট scope 120 ECTS, planned duration 2 years। Programme jointly Faculty of Science এবং Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry offer করে।

Teaching mainly English-এ হয়। Current programme guidance অনুযায়ী MSc thesis applicable language rule follow করে English, Finnish বা Swedish-এ লেখা যেতে পারে।

Programme multidisciplinary হওয়ায় thesis topic chemistry, aerosol physics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, biosphere-atmosphere exchange, climate-system modelling, observation, statistics বা sustainability-related Earth-system research-এর দিকে যেতে পারে।

1 August 2026 থেকে পাঁচটি current study track

Current programme-এ পাঁচটি study track রয়েছে:

1. Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Physics
2. Biosphere-Atmosphere Cycles
3. Climate and Sustainability
4. Meteorology
5. Physics of the Hydrosphere

এই structure 1 August 2026 থেকে current। এটি শুধু webpage rename নয়, curriculum transition। পুরোনো Aerosol Physics, Atmospheric Chemistry and Analysis এবং Remote Sensing track-এর existing student নির্দিষ্ট transition rule অনুযায়ী 31 July 2028 পর্যন্ত old track থেকে graduate করতে পারে অথবা new track-এ যেতে পারে।

2026-2027 guide-এর baseline অবশ্যই current five-track structure। New student-এর ক্ষেত্রে old six-track list copy করা যাবে না।

Master’s thesis 30 ECTS

Programme thesis-কে MSc degree-এর culminating project হিসেবে describe করে। Thesis 30 ECTS এবং student এটি independently plan ও complete করে।

Thesis-এর মাধ্যমে দেখাতে হবে যে student:

• scientific methodology বুঝতে এবং apply করতে পারে;
• demanding research project complete করতে পারে;
• defensible research question বা hypothesis তৈরি করতে পারে;
• literature, data, model, observation বা experiment যথাযথভাবে ব্যবহার করতে পারে; এবং
• scientific writing convention অনুযায়ী research communicate করতে পারে।

Research group-এর বড় project-এর অংশ হলেও thesis student-এর independently assessable work হতে হবে। Group data, instrument, model বা wider scientific problem দিতে পারে, কিন্তু student-এর নিজের analysis, interpretation এবং contribution আলাদা করে বোঝা যেতে হবে।

Topic programme professor-এর সঙ্গে agree করুন

Current programme guidance অনুযায়ী thesis topic programme-এর একজন professor-এর সঙ্গে consultation করে agree করতে হয়। Topic সাধারণত programme research group-এর কোনো research problem-এর সঙ্গে connected থাকে, অনেক ক্ষেত্রে INAR-এর group-এর সঙ্গে।

Topic final করার আগে clarify করুন:

• exact scientific question কী;
• project experimental, observational, computational, statistical, modelling-based নাকি mixed;
• data, measurements, code, model output বা field access available কি না;
• larger project-এর কোন অংশটি আপনার independent contribution;
• supervisor কে এবং feedback schedule কী হবে; এবং
• 30 ECTS scope-এর মধ্যে project realistically complete করা সম্ভব কি না।

Interesting topic হলেই thesis workable হয় না। Data, method, supervision এবং timeframe match করাও জরুরি।

Method track এবং research question অনুযায়ী বদলাবে

Programme scientific hypothesis form এবং test করার ওপর জোর দেয়। Atmospheric/environmental data analyse করতে experimental, computational এবং statistical method ব্যবহারের competence-ও programme outcome-এর অংশ।

তাই একই programme-এর দুইটি thesis সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন হতে পারে। কেউ aerosol measurement analyse করতে পারে, কেউ atmospheric chemistry, কেউ numerical model develop/evaluate করতে পারে, কেউ weather observation, hydrological বা oceanographic data নিয়ে কাজ করতে পারে, আবার কেউ biosphere-atmosphere interaction বা climate-sustainability question নিয়ে কাজ করতে পারে।

Method সবসময় research question এবং track context follow করবে। অন্য thesis কোন method ব্যবহার করেছে শুধু সেই কারণে নিজের project-এ সেটি নেওয়া ঠিক নয়।

Current Meteorology track-এর common block

Current 2026-2030 Meteorology study track page-এ common compulsory studies 40 ECTS দেখানো হয়েছে:

• Atmospheric and Earth Sciences Today: 5 ECTS
• Atmospheric science seminar for Master’s students: 5 ECTS
• Master’s thesis: 30 ECTS
• Maturity test: 0 ECTS

এই 40 ECTS figure current Meteorology-track source থেকে এসেছে। অন্য চারটি track-এর full structure reconstruct করতে এই number mechanically copy করা উচিত নয়। Programme-wideভাবে firmly established বিষয় হলো 30 ECTS thesis এবং 0 ECTS maturity test।

Thesis plan এবং supervision পরিষ্কার করুন

Current University-wide Master’s thesis framework thesis planning এবং অন্তত একজন supervisor require করে। Topic এবং supervision-এর more specific decision programme-এর rule অনুযায়ী হবে।

Useful thesis plan-এ সাধারণত থাকবে:

• main research question বা hypothesis;
• scientific background;
• data, observation, experimental material বা model input;
• statistical, computational, experimental বা analytical method;
• expected output;
• student-এর independent contribution;
• supervision arrangement; এবং
• research, analysis, writing এবং submission timetable।

INAR বা collaborative project হলে code, data, figure এবং analysis ownership আগেই clarify করা উচিত।

Universal page-count rule verified নয়

Current verified programme-wide sources একটি universal thesis page range establish করে না।

Computer Science, Chemistry, Humanities বা অন্য Helsinki programme-এর page guidance এখানে import করবেন না। Atmospheric-science thesis-এ dataset, equations, model description, figures, methods এবং appendix-এর প্রয়োজন projectভেদে অনেক বদলাতে পারে। Length current track, supervisor এবং actual research need অনুযায়ী ঠিক করতে হবে।

Universal citation style-ও verified নয়

এই guide-এর current programme-wide evidence পাঁচটি track-এর জন্য একটি universal citation system establish করে না। তাই APA, Harvard, numerical বা অন্য style programme-wide ধরে নেওয়া যাবে না, যদি না current track, course, template বা supervisor সেটি specify করে।

যে style required, সেটি consistently apply করতে হবে এবং claim, dataset, model, method ও external idea-এর source traceable রাখতে হবে।

Current assessment page এখনও ATM-MP বলে

এটি programme documentation-এর সবচেয়ে important practical issueগুলোর একটি। Current University teaching guidance-এ section-এর নাম এখনও Assessment and approval of the thesis in ATM-MP এবং degree label Master’s Programme in Atmospheric Sciences।

Current programme sources explicitly বলে renamed programme আগে Atmospheric Sciences ছিল। তাই current ATM-MP assessment section renamed programme-এর administrative continuation। এটি guess নয়, official rename evidence দিয়ে supported।

Current administrative page-এ ATM-MP দেখলে প্রথমে page current কি না দেখুন, তারপর current renamed programme page-এর সঙ্গে মিলিয়ে পড়ুন।

Final submission E-thesis-এ

Student এবং supervisor দুজন thesis final মনে করলে assessed version E-thesis-এ applicable deadline-এর মধ্যে submit করতে হয়।

Current ATM-MP instructions একটি critical rule দেয়: final assessment submission-এর পরে thesis-এ আর changes করা যায় না। তাই final submit করার আগে নিশ্চিত করুন:

• correct PDF upload হয়েছে;
• title, language এবং abstract ঠিক;
• supervisor information ঠিক;
• publication information complete;
• figure, table, equation এবং reference final; এবং
• public thesis-এ থাকা উচিত নয় এমন confidential material নেই।

Supervisor proposed examiner-এর নাম Kumpula Student Services-এ জানায়, এরপর assessment E-thesis workflow-এ যায়।

দুই examiner এবং 0-5 grading

Current ATM-MP / Faculty rule অনুযায়ী thesis examine করেন:

• Faculty-এর qualifying professor, assistant/associate professor, research director, senior university lecturer বা university lecturer; এবং
• অন্তত doctoral degree থাকা আরেকজন examiner।

Supervisor প্রায়ই examiner-এর একজন হন এবং second examiner identify করেন।

Thesis 0-5 scale-এ programme evaluation matrix ব্যবহার করে grade হয়। Extreme grade 0, 1 এবং 5 clearly justify করতে হয়। Examiner assessment শেষ হলে case Dean-এর final approval-এর জন্য যায়।

তাই submission date graduation/final approval date নয়।

Abstract-ই maturity test

Current ATM-MP process-এ একজন examiner thesis abstract-কে maturity test হিসেবে approve করেন।

Maturity test 0 ECTS এবং pass/fail। Language rule student-এর prior education, secondary-education language এবং previous degree-তে required language competence already demonstrated হয়েছে কি না তার ওপর depend করে।

Finnish বা Swedish language competence related special requirement থাকলে final abstract করার আগে current University maturity-test instruction check করা জরুরি।

Maturity test-এ AI কখনো allowed নয়। Broader thesis writing-এ AI কিছু context-এ allowed হতে পারে, কিন্তু maturity test-এর prohibition absolute current University rule।

Thesis-এ AI use controlled এবং disclosed হতে হবে

Maturity test ছাড়া thesis work-এ University policy generally AI tool support allow করতে পারে, যদি teacher, programme এবং Faculty rule সেটি permit করে এবং reporting requirement follow করা হয়।

কিন্তু responsibility student-এরই থাকে। Student responsible থাকবে:

• factual accuracy;
• source verification;
• data/model output-এর correct interpretation;
• research ethics;
• fabricated reference/result এড়ানো; এবং
• required AI disclosure করা।

Supervisor বা project stricter rule দিলে সেটিই control করবে।

2026-2027 submission rounds

Current University timetable-এ Faculty of Science এবং Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry একই 2026-2027 thesis schedule-এর মধ্যে রয়েছে, যা এই jointly offered programme-এর জন্য useful clarity দেয়।

প্রতিটি submission deadline-এর cutoff 23:59 Finnish time।

July-তে thesis assessment হয় না। Current guidance অনুযায়ী Faculty/programme আলাদা করে require না করলে July-তে normal supervision এবং feedback-ও দেওয়া হয় না। তাই শুধু writing finish date নয়, examiner assessment এবং Dean decision-এর date ধরেও plan করতে হবে।

Thesis publication এবং Helda

E-thesis University publication/archiving workflow-এর অংশ। Approved thesis Helda-তে transfer হয় এবং thesis abstract সবসময় public।

University open publication, limited publication এবং embargo নিয়ে current procedure দেয়। Company information, unpublished research material, sensitive dataset বা potentially patentable work থাকলে confidentiality/publicity boundary thesis-এর শুরুতেই resolve করা উচিত। Assessed public thesis-এর appendix-এ confidential material রেখে দিলেই সেটি protected হয়ে যাবে, এমন assumption করা যাবে না।

Practical thesis workflow

Current programme-এর জন্য একটি defensible workflow:

1. Current track identify করুন। 1 August 2026 থেকে five-track structure use করুন, যদি না আপনি officially old track transition-এর under-এ থাকেন।
2. Research problem identify করুন। Available expertise, data এবং method-এর সঙ্গে fit করে এমন question নিন।
3. Programme professor-এর সঙ্গে topic discuss করুন। Scientific scope এবং likely supervisor/research group confirm করুন।
4. Thesis plan তৈরি করুন। Question/hypothesis, data, method, independent contribution এবং timeline লিখুন।
5. Technical access confirm করুন। Data, code, model run, instrument বা observation বাস্তবে accessible কি না verify করুন।
6. Research-এর সঙ্গে writing চালান। Method, decision এবং analysis ongoing অবস্থায় document করুন।
7. Current track-এর format/reference requirement check করুন। অন্য programme-এর page count/citation rule import করবেন না।
8. Abstract carefully final করুন। Current ATM-MP process-এ এটিই maturity test।
9. E-thesis final check করুন। Submitted assessed version পরে freely edit করা যায় না।
10. 23:59 Finnish time-এর আগে submit করুন এবং examiner assessment + Dean decision-এর সময় ধরে graduation plan করুন।

Final checklist

Submit করার আগে নিশ্চিত করুন:

• correct current programme/track structure follow করছেন;
• topic appropriate programme professor এবং supervisor-এর সঙ্গে agreed;
• collaborative/INAR project হলে independent contribution clearly defined;
• research question, data এবং method aligned;
• অন্য programme-এর page-count rule copy করা হয়নি;
• actual track/project-এর required citation/format convention check করা হয়েছে;
• thesis-এ AI use current rule অনুযায়ী permitted এবং required হলে disclosed;
• maturity test-এ AI use হয়নি;
• abstract maturity-test এবং applicable language requirement satisfy করে;
• examiner process current University instruction অনুযায়ী হতে পারবে;
• E-thesis PDF exact final assessed version; এবং
• chosen deadline examiner assessment ও Dean decision-এর জন্য realistic সময় দেয়।

More specific বা newer University, programme, track অথবা supervisor instruction থাকলে সেটিই priority পাবে।
