এই guide University of Helsinki-এর Master’s Programme in Global Politics and Communication (GPC)-এর 2026-2027 academic year-এর students-দের জন্য, যারা Master’s thesis plan করছেন, thesis seminar-এ কাজ করছেন অথবা E-thesis submission-এর প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন। এখানে current programme structure, তিনটি study track, thesis seminar, supervisor, 50-70 page thesis guidance, Faculty of Social Sciences assessment, maturity test, AI use এবং E-thesis process একসাথে সহজভাবে explain করা হয়েছে। তবে আপনার thesis seminar, supervisor, study track, Sisu এবং E-thesis-এর current instruction যদি আরও specific হয়, তাহলে সেই specific instruction follow করতে হবে।

GPC একটি multidisciplinary programme। Media and Democracy track-এর thesis এবং World Politics and Economic Governance track-এর thesis একইভাবে design হতে হবে এমন কোনো current public rule নেই। Governance, Organisations and Communication track-এও topic, theory এবং method আলাদা হতে পারে। তাই programme একটি common academic framework দেয়, কিন্তু সবাইকে একই method, citation style বা chapter structure ব্যবহার করতে বলে না।

Thesis-এর মূল requirement

GPC degree মোট 120 ECTS এবং দুই academic year-এর জন্য designed। Programme-এর language English এবং current structure-এ তিনটি study track আছে:

1. Governance, Organisations and Communication
2. Media and Democracy
3. World Politics and Economic Governance

Current degree structure-এ 20 ECTS joint studies, 30 ECTS study-track-specific studies, দুইটি 5 ECTS Master’s thesis seminar, 30 ECTS Master’s thesis, 5-15 ECTS career skills এবং 15-25 ECTS elective studies আছে। Joint studies-এর মধ্যে 10 ECTS methodology courses থাকে। এই methods courses research project এবং thesis writing support করার জন্য advanced analysis এবং research skill develop করতে সাহায্য করে।

Master’s thesis মূলত second year-এর বড় independent research project। Programme guidance অনুযায়ী thesis topic student’s study track-এর সঙ্গে related হবে এবং usual length প্রায় 50-70 pages। Faculty of Social Sciences-এর current thesis rule-এও GPC-এর জন্য একই 50-70 page length দেওয়া আছে। তাই এটি শুধু programme page-এর একটি casual suggestion নয়, current Faculty framework-এর সঙ্গেও consistent।

তিনটি study track thesis-কে কীভাবে shape করে

আপনার study track thesis topic-এর disciplinary environment তৈরি করে। Governance, Organisations and Communication track governance, organisation এবং communication-এর সম্পর্ক নিয়ে কাজ করে। এখানে organisational communication, governance of knowledge, digitalisation, political communication এবং media policy-এর মতো area relevant হতে পারে। Media and Democracy track media এবং democratic process-এর relationship, political participation, populism, polarisation, representation, freedom of expression এবং mediated activism-এর মতো বিষয় নিয়ে কাজ করে। World Politics and Economic Governance track world politics এবং global economy-এর connection, inequality, peace and conflict, governance, integration এবং disintegration-এর মতো বিষয়কে গুরুত্ব দেয়।

এর practical meaning হলো, thesis planning করার সময় প্রথমে একটি manageable problem identify করুন এবং দেখুন এটি আপনার track-এর academic discussion-এর মধ্যে naturally fit করে কি না। খুব broad global topic নিয়ে শুরু করে পরে সেটিকে thesis-এ force করার চেষ্টা করলে scope control করা কঠিন হয়ে যায়। Study track একটি boundary দেয়, কিন্তু এটি একটিমাত্র method বাধ্যতামূলক করে না।

First year থেকেই thesis-এর preparation শুরু হয়

GPC structure thesis writing শুরু হওয়ার আগেই students-কে preparation দেয়। First year-এ theoretical, methodological এবং track-specific courses থাকে। 10 ECTS methodology component বিশেষভাবে thesis-এর জন্য useful, কারণ programme নিজেই বলে এই courses research project এবং dissertation writing support করে।

Current GPC guidance অনুযায়ী incoming students first year-এ track-specific teacher tutor পায়। Teacher tutor study plan organise করা, resource identify করা এবং programme-এর মধ্যে realistic progress strategy develop করতে সাহায্য করে। Final thesis topic তখনও fix না হলেও এই stage-এ নিজের interest এবং possible research direction নিয়ে চিন্তা করা useful।

Second year thesis-এর জন্য বেশি focused। GPC second year জুড়ে MA thesis supervision দেয় এবং দুইটি 5 ECTS Master’s thesis seminar project development-এর structured জায়গা তৈরি করে। Student নিজের topic choose করে, seminar-এর মধ্যে research plan develop করে, supervisor-এর advice নেয় এবং regularভাবে progress present করে। তাই thesis-কে coursework শেষ হওয়ার পরে হঠাৎ শুরু হওয়া একটি isolated writing task হিসেবে দেখা উচিত নয়। First-year theory এবং methods courses থেকে research interest identify করে thesis seminar-এর মাধ্যমে সেটিকে feasible project-এ convert করা বেশি practical approach।

30 ECTS thesis মানে বড় project, কিন্তু unlimited project নয়

30 ECTS thesis substantial work, কিন্তু এর scope bounded। 50-70 page guidance-এর purpose হলো project realistic রাখা। এটি এমন target নয় যে যেকোনোভাবে বেশি content দিয়ে page fill করতে হবে।

Topic final করার আগে কয়েকটি বিষয় যাচাই করুন। Research problem কি এক Master’s thesis-এর মধ্যে answer করা সম্ভব? প্রয়োজনীয় data বা source কি available? Selected method কি সত্যিই research question answer করতে পারে? Ethical approval, consent বা data protection requirement থাকলে সেগুলো কি available time-এর মধ্যে manage করা যাবে? Theory এবং empirical material কি এত বেশি হয়ে যাচ্ছে যে analysis shallow হয়ে যাবে?

Programme বলে research plan Master’s thesis seminar-এর মধ্যে develop করা হয়। এই stage-এ supervisor এবং seminar feedback ব্যবহার করে scope reduce করা খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। যদি project-এ অনেক country, অনেক historical period, অনেক platform, অতিরিক্ত interview বা unrelated theoretical framework লাগে, তাহলে project ছোট করা অনেক সময় academic quality বাড়ায়।

Empirical এবং theoretical দুই ধরনের thesis-ই possible

GPC thesis মানেই original empirical data collect করতে হবে, এমন assumption করা ঠিক নয়। Current Faculty of Social Sciences assessment criteria empirical এবং theoretical দুই ধরনের thesis-ই explicitly accommodate করে। Research data and methods assessment area theoretical thesis-এর ক্ষেত্রে differently applied হয় এবং relevant না হলে এর weight কম হতে পারে।

Empirical thesis interviews, documents, media content, policy material, survey data, statistical data, digital material বা organisational records ব্যবহার করতে পারে। কোন material appropriate হবে তা research question এবং access condition-এর উপর depend করবে। Theoretical thesis conceptual, interpretive বা argumentative হতে পারে। সেখানে empirical dataset না থাকলেও clear research problem, systematic reasoning, strong scholarly source use এবং transparent argument development প্রয়োজন।

তাই empirical না theoretical, এই choice আগে থেকে preference দিয়ে করার চেয়ে research question অনুযায়ী design select করা ভালো। Research question যেভাবে সবচেয়ে defensibly answer করা যায়, সেই design-ই thesis-এর জন্য appropriate।

Methodology carefully select করুন

GPC students 10 ECTS methodology courses complete করে এবং programme track ও research interest অনুযায়ী method নির্বাচন করার flexibility দেয়। এই flexibility useful, কিন্তু একই সঙ্গে student-এর responsibility বাড়ায়।

শুধু software জানা আছে বলে method select করবেন না। অন্য student একই method ব্যবহার করেছে বলেও method copy করবেন না। Method research question-এর সঙ্গে logically linked হতে হবে। Discourse, political meaning বা communication practice নিয়ে question হলে qualitative বা interpretive approach useful হতে পারে। বড় dataset-এর relationship নিয়ে question হলে quantitative analysis suitable হতে পারে। Theoretical explanation হলে conceptual argument এবং critical literature engagement বেশি central হতে পারে।

যে approach-ই ব্যবহার করুন, material কী, কীভাবে select করা হয়েছে, analysis কীভাবে হয়েছে এবং limitation কী, এগুলো clear করতে হবে। Faculty assessment research question, scholarly framework, data বা material, method, result এবং conclusion-এর alignment দেখে।

Chapter structure নিয়ে unnecessary assumption করবেন না

Current public GPC source একটি compulsory programme-wide chapter template establish করে না। তাই APA-style generic template বা অন্য কোনো programme-এর structure copy করে GPC rule হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা ঠিক হবে না। Thesis seminar এবং supervisor-এর instruction follow করতে হবে।

Planning-এর জন্য functional structure ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে: introduction এবং research problem; previous research ও theoretical framework; research question; material/data/methodology অথবা theoretical design section; analysis বা main argument; findings; discussion and conclusion; references; এবং প্রয়োজন হলে appendices। কিন্তু এগুলো mandatory chapter title নয়। Theoretical thesis theory এবং analysis integrate করতে পারে। Media thesis thematic chapter ব্যবহার করতে পারে। Political economy thesis-এর sequence আলাদা হতে পারে। Structure-এর কাজ argument support করা।

Citation style নিয়ে সবচেয়ে safe approach

Current public GPC এবং Faculty evidence সব GPC thesis-এর জন্য একটিমাত্র named referencing style establish করে না। তাই সব student-কে APA, Harvard, Chicago বা অন্য কোনো specific style use করতে হবে বলে claim করা safe নয়।

যেটি clear, তা হলো source use correct এবং consistent হতে হবে। বড় section লেখা শুরু করার আগে thesis seminar বা supervisor-এর সঙ্গে citation convention confirm করুন। GPC multidisciplinary হওয়ায় political science, communication, media research এবং global political economy-এর convention এক নাও হতে পারে।

Selected style যাই হোক, important claim, quotation, dataset, institutional report এবং online source যেন traceable হয়। Reference list এবং in-text citation consistent রাখুন। Page number, edited book, report, website এবং dataset কীভাবে cite হবে, সেটিও early stage-এ ঠিক করলে final editing অনেক সহজ হয়।

Thesis English-এ complete করার requirement

GPC একটি English-language programme। Current guidance অনুযায়ী degree-এর কমপক্ষে 75% fully English-এ complete করতে হবে এবং এই rule-এর মধ্যে seminars, seminar papers, exams এবং Master’s thesis explicitly included।

তাই thesis language-এর ক্ষেত্রে শুধু “programme mostly English” ধরে নেওয়া উচিত নয়। Master’s thesis current degree-language framework-এর অংশ। যদি আপনার unusual language circumstance থাকে, তাহলে অন্য language-এ thesis plan করার আগে programme-এর সঙ্গে verify করুন। কিছু elective credit Finnish বা Swedish-এ করা যায় বলে thesis-ও automatically অন্য language-এ করা যাবে, এমন assumption করবেন না।

Research ethics এবং data protection শুরুতেই ভাবুন

GPC thesis politically sensitive topic, public communication, organisation, online community, interview বা identifiable person-এর data নিয়ে কাজ করতে পারে। তাই ethics analysis শেষ হওয়ার পরে add করার বিষয় নয়। Research design-এর সময় থেকেই এটি consider করা দরকার।

Participants বা personal data থাকলে consent, privacy, data protection, storage এবং research permit requirement আগেই determine করুন। Online information publicly visible হলেও research use automatically unrestricted হয় না। Political vulnerability, harm, platform context এবং participant expectation matter করতে পারে।

Documentary বা theoretical thesis-এও research integrity equally important। Source accurately represent করুন, author’s argument এবং নিজের interpretation আলাদা রাখুন, এবং context বদলে যায় এমন selective quotation avoid করুন। Strong thesis শুধু important topic-এর উপর depend করে না; reasoning কত transparent এবং defensible, সেটিও equally important।

AI use: allowed use disclose করুন, maturity test-এ কখনও নয়

University of Helsinki current guidance অনুযায়ী large language model অনেক learning context-এ ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে, কিন্তু course, programme বা Faculty stricter rule দিতে পারে। Submitted work-এর accuracy এবং validity-এর responsibility student-এর। AI use applicable instruction অনুযায়ী disclose করতে হয়। যেখানে reporting required, সেখানে use report না করলে academic-integrity issue হতে পারে।

Thesis-এর ক্ষেত্রে uncertain AI use supervisor-এর সঙ্গে discuss করুন। Literature organise করা, translation, language revision, code generation বা qualitative material organise করার ক্ষেত্রে exact use permitted কি না এবং কীভাবে verify/report করতে হবে, সেটি confirm করা দরকার। একটি rule absolute: maturity test-এ AI use করা যাবে না।

1 August 2026 থেকে seven-area assessment

Faculty of Social Sciences-এ 1 August 2026 থেকে submit হওয়া Master’s thesis current seven-area assessment model-এর মধ্যে পড়ে। Seven areas হলো:

1. Thesis objective and research questions
2. Scholarly framework and use of sources
3. Research data and methods
4. Presentation of thesis results
5. Discussion and conclusions
6. Thesis as an academic text
7. Work during the thesis process

Seventh area খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ final document-এর বাইরে thesis process-ও assessment-এর অংশ হয়। এখানে independence, feedback ব্যবহার, time management এবং systematic working দেখা হয়। এই area supervising reviewer assess করেন। তাই supervisor meeting, feedback response এবং project management-কে শুধু administrative বিষয় হিসেবে দেখা উচিত নয়।

Final grade University-এর 0-5 scale-এ থাকে। Faculty স্পষ্ট করে যে seven area-এর simple mathematical average করলেই final grade হবে এমন নয়। Thesis overall academic work হিসেবে assess করা হয়।

Examiners এবং final grade decision

Formal submission-এর পরে দুইজন examiner appoint করা হয়। Current Faculty framework অনুযায়ী একজন examiner সাধারণত thesis supervisor এবং দুই examiner-এরই doctoral degree থাকতে হবে। Examiners assessment এবং grade proposal তৈরি করেন। Final approval এবং grade decision Dean করেন।

এই কারণে submission date এবং graduation timing plan করার সময় শুধু upload date দেখলে হবে না। Examiner statement, grade proposal এবং Dean’s decision-এর timeline-ও consider করতে হবে।

Thesis abstract-ই maturity test

Faculty of Social Sciences-এর Master’s thesis-এর ক্ষেত্রে thesis abstract maturity test হিসেবে কাজ করে। Maturity test separate 0 ECTS attainment এবং pass/fail হিসেবে assessed হয়। সাধারণত supervisor বা relevant teacher এটি assess করেন।

Maturity test-এর language student’s previous education এবং previous maturity-test history-এর উপর depend করে। কেউ আগেই required language competence demonstrate করে থাকলে তার situation এবং Finland-এর বাইরে previous degree করা student-এর situation এক হতে পারে না। তাই নিজের educational background অনুযায়ী current University instruction check করা ভালো।

Abstract-কে last-minute summary হিসেবে লিখবেন না। Research objective, scholarly context, material বা theoretical basis, method যেখানে relevant, এবং central findings বা argument clearভাবে communicate করতে হবে। সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণভাবে, maturity test complete করতে AI use করা যাবে না।

E-thesis submission-এর file সত্যিকারের final হতে হবে

Formal thesis University of Helsinki E-thesis system-এর মাধ্যমে submit করা হয়। Degree programme select করা, supervisor details, thesis title, language, abstract এবং publication-related information carefully fill করতে হবে।

Assessment-এর জন্য final file submit করার আগে references, tables, figures, appendices, page numbers, comments এবং tracked changes সব check করুন। Final submission-এর পরে substantive thesis file correct করা যাবে ধরে planning করবেন না। Upload করার file-টাই final assessed version হিসেবে prepare করুন।

Approved Master’s thesis public document। Confidential বা secret material thesis বা appendix-এর মধ্যে রাখা যাবে না। Sensitive commissioned material, restricted organisational document বা personal information থাকলে research planning stage-এই public thesis থেকে সেগুলো কীভাবে separate থাকবে তা ঠিক করতে হবে। E-thesis এবং Helda publication process manage করে এবং justified reason থাকলে embargo request-এর formal route থাকে।

Faculty of Social Sciences submission dates 2026-2027

Current Faculty timetable অনুযায়ী submission cutoff 23:59 Finnish time।

Faculty July-তে thesis assessment করে না এবং সাধারণভাবে July-তে supervision ও feedback দেওয়া হয় না, unless specifically required। তাই graduation target থাকলে submission date থেকে backwards plan করুন এবং examiner ও Dean decision-এর সময়ও include করুন।

Final month কীভাবে organise করবেন

Submission-এর চার সপ্তাহ আগে research scope freeze করা ভালো। Remaining analysis বা theoretical development finish করুন এবং supervisor-এর সঙ্গে substantive revision agree করুন। তিন সপ্তাহ আগে পুরো argument একসাথে revise করুন: research question, framework, material, method, analysis এবং conclusion aligned কি না দেখুন। দুই সপ্তাহ আগে references, table, figure, heading, terminology এবং appendix standardise করুন। Final week-এ maturity-test abstract prepare করুন, final formatting complete করুন, E-thesis metadata এবং publication choice verify করুন, তারপর genuine final PDF upload করুন।

GPC student-এর final checklist

Submission-এর আগে নিশ্চিত করুন যে thesis 30 ECTS scope-এর মধ্যে আছে; topic GPC study-track context-এর সঙ্গে academically connected; 50-70 page guidance-এর মধ্যে scope realistic; research question clear এবং justified; empirical বা theoretical design question-এর সঙ্গে fit করে; research plan এবং thesis seminar properly used হয়েছে; supervisor feedback consider করা হয়েছে; sources traceable এবং referencing consistent; ethics ও data protection issue resolve করা হয়েছে; thesis required language-এ complete; AI use যেখানে দরকার report করা হয়েছে এবং maturity test-এ AI use হয়নি; abstract maturity test হিসেবে ready; final PDF-এ confidential material বা unresolved editing mark নেই; E-thesis information correct; এবং relevant 2026-2027 deadline verify করা হয়েছে।

GPC thesis-এর central principle হলো alignment। Manageable research problem, appropriate scholarly framework, suitable evidence বা theoretical reasoning, defensible method এবং research question-এর clear answer একে অপরকে support করতে হবে। Programme politics, communication এবং global political economy-এর মধ্যে অনেক flexibility দেয়, কিন্তু strong thesis তৈরি হয় যখন সেই flexibility disciplined, transparent এবং feasible research design-এর মধ্যে ব্যবহার করা হয়।
