University of Helsinki Geology and Geophysics Master’s Thesis Guide 2026-2027

University of Helsinki-এর Master’s Programme in Geology and Geophysics Faculty of Science-এর 120 ECTS, দুই বছরের একটি Master’s programme। এই programme-এর thesis process-এর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বৈশিষ্ট্য হলো early planning। Student-কে শুধু second year-এর শেষে thesis লেখা শুরু করার জন্য অপেক্ষা না করে first-year spring থেকেই research problem, supervisor, data বা fieldwork, method এবং research plan নিয়ে কাজ শুরু করতে হয়।

এই guide শুধুমাত্র thesis process নিয়ে। Admission eligibility, tuition fee, scholarship, language-test score বা application deadline এখানে intentionally include করা হয়নি।

বর্তমান degree structure

Degree-এর মোট scope 120 ECTS এবং planned duration 2 years। Programme-এর অধিকাংশ teaching English-এ হয়, যদিও hydrogeology বা environmental geology-এর কিছু teaching Finnish-এ হতে পারে। English-taught course-এর examination নির্দিষ্ট নিয়মে Finnish বা Swedish-এও করা যেতে পারে। Master’s thesis English, Finnish বা Swedish-এ লেখা যায়।

Current structure-এ 100-120 ECTS advanced studies রয়েছে। এর মধ্যে:

• 30 ECTS Master’s thesis;
• 0 ECTS maturity test;
• 25 ECTS compulsory common studies; এবং
• minimum 45 ECTS advanced geology/geophysics studies থাকে।

Other studies 0-20 ECTS হতে পারে। Programme বিভিন্ন thematic course grouping দেখায়, কিন্তু এগুলোকে rigid thesis track হিসেবে ধরা ঠিক নয়। Thesis topic ও method নির্ধারণে research question, prior studies, available data, research group এবং supervisor-এর expertise বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Thesis 30 ECTS

Master’s thesis-এর scope 30 ECTS, যা প্রায় এক academic term full-time work-এর সমান। Project কোনো research group বা external organisation-এর সঙ্গে connected হলেও final thesis student-এর independently written এবং independently assessable work হতে হবে।

Geology and Geophysics thesis সাধারণত current scientific literature-এর review-এর সঙ্গে একটি research component combine করে। Project অনুযায়ী geological/geophysical dataset analysis, field observation, laboratory experiment, computational analysis, modelling বা interpretation থাকতে পারে। একাধিক method একসাথেও ব্যবহার হতে পারে যদি research question সেটি justify করে।

Programme-এর research environment-এ geology and geophysics, biogeosciences এবং seismology-এর current projects রয়েছে। এগুলো thesis topic বা supervision-এর context দিতে পারে, কিন্তু বড় project-এর অংশ হলেও student-এর নিজস্ব question, analysis এবং contribution স্পষ্ট থাকতে হবে।

First-year spring-এ GEOM1002 দিয়ে শুরু

এই programme-এর thesis process-এর সবচেয়ে useful planning rule হলো GEOM1002 Conducting Scientific Research। Current instructions অনুযায়ী thesis work এই course-এর মাধ্যমে annual spring cycle-এ শুরু হয় এবং সাধারণত first year-এর spring semester-এ নেওয়া উপযুক্ত।

এই course-এর সময় student thesis idea-কে proposal এবং research plan-এ পরিণত করে। তাই first-year spring শুধু topic search-এর সময় নয়; তখন থেকেই project feasibility, data access, field season, method এবং supervision practicalভাবে plan করা উচিত।

একটি sensible sequence:

1. broad research area নির্ধারণ করুন;
2. relevant teacher/research group/supervisor-এর সঙ্গে possible topic নিয়ে আলোচনা করুন;
3. main research question narrow করুন;
4. data, fieldwork, laboratory work বা computational method লাগবে কি না ঠিক করুন;
5. GEOM1002-এ proposal ও research plan তৈরি করুন; এবং
6. research, analysis ও writing-এর realistic timetable বানান।

Current programme guidance অনুযায়ী fieldwork অনেক সময় first ও second year-এর মাঝের summer-এ করা হয়। কিছু ক্ষেত্রে internship-এর সঙ্গে thesis data collection combine হতে পারে। তাই field-based thesis হলে deadline plan করার সময় seasonality খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। একটি field season miss করলে সেটি পরে extra writing দিয়ে সহজে replace করা যায় না।

Supervisor-এর সঙ্গে detailed thesis plan করুন

Formal thesis work শুরু হলে student এবং supervisor/supervisors একটি detailed thesis plan তৈরি করে। Current programme-specific instruction অনুযায়ী signed plan HelsinkiUni Help-এর মাধ্যমে submit করতে হয়।

Plan-এ ideally পরিষ্কার থাকবে:

• research problem এবং questions;
• scientific background/literature;
• material বা dataset;
• method;
• fieldwork/laboratory/computational stages;
• larger project হলে student-এর independent contribution;
• supervision arrangement; এবং
• timetable।

Department বা Institute-এর research project-এর সঙ্গে thesis করা যায় এবং relevant external research institute বা private company-এর সঙ্গে collaboration-ও possible। কিন্তু external collaboration student-এর independent academic responsibility কমায় না।

Universal page-count rule নেই

Current verified programme sources একটিও universal Geology and Geophysics thesis page range establish করে না। Programme-এর linked thesis guide writing/layout নিয়ে detail দেয়, কিন্তু thesis-কে নির্দিষ্ট page target-এ বাধ্য করে না।

Chemistry, Computer Science, Humanities বা অন্য Helsinki programme-এর page range এখানে copy করবেন না। Geology/geophysics project-এ maps, figures, field material, analytical outputs, code বা appendices-এর volume project অনুযায়ী অনেক ভিন্ন হতে পারে। Research question ও programme template অনুযায়ী scope ঠিক করুন।

Harvard-style author-year reference follow করুন

Current programme instruction student-দের programme thesis guideline, template এবং cover-page requirement follow করতে বলে। বর্তমানে linked Geology and Geophysics thesis guide Harvard-style author-year citation ব্যবহার করে।

অর্থাৎ text-এর মধ্যে author ও year দিয়ে citation করা হয় এবং final reference list alphabetical order-এ সাজানো হয়। Programme guide original বা first-hand scientific source যতটা সম্ভব use করতে উৎসাহ দেয়। EndNote বা Zotero reference management সহজ করতে পারে, তবে final formatting নিজে check করতে হবে।

Linked guide scientific thesis-এর একটি useful structural model-ও দেয়: introduction, geological setting/background, materials, methods, results, discussion, conclusions, acknowledgements, references এবং appendices। Project-এর nature অনুযায়ী exact section বদলাতে পারে। Computational code বা extensive supporting material appendix-এ দেওয়া যেতে পারে যদি reproducibility ও readability improve হয়।

2021 PDF-এর পুরোনো process follow করবেন না

Programme এখনও 2021-এ updated একটি thesis-guidelines PDF link করে কারণ এর writing, layout এবং reference guidance এখনো current page-এর মাধ্যমে student-দের follow করতে বলা হচ্ছে। কিন্তু ওই PDF-এর কিছু administrative process পুরোনো।

2026-2027-এর জন্য current web instructions priority পাবে। বিশেষ করে:

• current course হলো GEOM1002 Conducting Scientific Research; PDF-এর পুরোনো GEOM_1003 wording follow করবেন না;
• current Sisu + new E-thesis process use করুন; পুরোনো Ouriginal-era workflow নয়; এবং
• current Faculty of Science examiner এবং Dean approval process follow করুন; পুরোনো programme-board process নয়।

এই distinction খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ: পুরোনো linked document-এর scientific writing convention current থাকতে পারে, কিন্তু administrative workflow নতুন page দ্বারা supersede হতে পারে।

Sisu এবং new E-thesis

Final assessment-এর আগে thesis ও maturity-test-এর প্রয়োজনীয় registration Sisu-তে complete করতে হবে। Final thesis PDF new E-thesis system-এ submit করা হয়।

Uploaded file-কে final হিসেবে treat করুন। Final submission-এর পরে document simpleভাবে edit করা যায় না। Major correction প্রয়োজন হলে assessment stop করে University-এর resubmission process follow করতে হয়।

Submission-এর আগে check করুন:

• current template ও cover page ঠিক আছে;
• title এবং abstract final version-এর সঙ্গে match করে;
• maps, figures, tables readable এবং properly attributed;
• references complete এবং consistent;
• appendices properly cited;
• confidential information remove করা হয়েছে; এবং
• uploaded PDF-ই exact final assessment copy।

Examiner এবং grading

Faculty of Science framework অনুযায়ী thesis-এর দুইজন examiner থাকে। একজন examiner University-এর appropriately qualified academic হন, যেমন professor, assistant/associate professor, research director, senior university lecturer বা university lecturer। অন্য examiner-এর at least doctoral degree থাকতে হয়। Rule permit করলে supervisor examiner হিসেবেও কাজ করতে পারেন।

Thesis 0-5 scale-এ programme evaluation matrix অনুযায়ী graded হয়। এখানে শুধু page সংখ্যা বা data volume দিয়ে quality নির্ধারণ করা হয় না; research question, scientific reasoning, method, analysis, interpretation এবং presentation-এর quality গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Final approval এবং grade-এর decision Dean নেন।

Abstract-ই maturity test

Geology and Geophysics programme-এর current instruction অনুযায়ী thesis abstract maturity test হিসেবে কাজ করে। Maturity test 0 ECTS এবং pass/fail। Student-এর previous education এবং earlier maturity test-এর ওপর maturity-test language requirement নির্ভর করতে পারে, তাই personal situation অনুযায়ী current University rule check করুন।

Maturity test-এ AI ব্যবহার নিষিদ্ধ। University-এর broader AI policy অনুযায়ী thesis writing-এর অন্য stage-এ teacher/programme/faculty restrictions, disclosure এবং research-integrity rule মেনে AI support কখনো allowed হতে পারে, কিন্তু student final content-এর accuracy ও reasoning-এর জন্য responsible থাকে।

Faculty of Science 2026-2027 deadlines

Submission deadline প্রতিটি date-এ 23:59 Finnish time।

July-তে thesis assessment হয় না। Current Faculty guidance অনুযায়ী special requirement না থাকলে July-তে normal supervision বা feedback expect করাও উচিত নয়। তাই graduation target থাকলে শুধু submission date নয়, grade proposal এবং Dean decision date-ও plan করুন।

Publicity এবং confidential data

Master’s thesis public document। Abstract-ও public এবং applicable repository process-এর মাধ্যমে Helda-তে প্রকাশিত হয়। Thesis, appendix বা abstract-এর মধ্যে confidential information রাখা যাবে না।

Company collaboration, sensitive field location বা restricted dataset থাকলে writing শেষ হওয়ার আগেই confidentiality boundary supervisor এবং relevant organisation-এর সঙ্গে ঠিক করুন। Research data আলাদা access rule-এর অধীনে থাকতে পারে, কিন্তু assessed thesis public-document rules follow করবে।

Practical workflow

1. First-year spring: GEOM1002-এ research question ও plan develop করুন।
2. Data/fieldwork-এর আগে: supervisor, access, permission, method ও schedule confirm করুন।
3. Relevant summer: fieldwork বা internship-linked data collection complete করুন।
4. Formal start: detailed signed thesis plan complete করে current channel-এ submit করুন।
5. Research stage: data, methods, code, maps ও analytical decision properly document করুন।
6. Writing stage: programme template এবং Harvard author-year system follow করে analysis-এর সঙ্গে writing parallelভাবে করুন।
7. Pre-submission: Sisu requirement, abstract/maturity-test, confidentiality ও references final check করুন।
8. Submission: selected Faculty deadline-এর আগে 23:59 Finnish time-এর মধ্যে final PDF E-thesis-এ upload করুন।
9. Assessment: two-examiner process এবং Dean decision-এর জন্য timetable-এ সময় রাখুন।

Final checklist

Submit করার আগে নিশ্চিত করুন:

• thesis Sisu-তে correctly registered;
• signed detailed thesis plan current process অনুযায়ী completed;
• programme template/cover page followed;
• research question, material এবং method aligned;
• independent contribution clear;
• Harvard-style author-year citations consistent;
• reference list alphabetical;
• অন্য programme-এর page-count rule copy করা হয়নি;
• abstract maturity-test requirement satisfy করে;
• maturity test-এ AI ব্যবহার হয়নি;
• confidential information নেই;
• E-thesis PDF exact final version; এবং
• current Faculty of Science deadline ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

Programme, Faculty, University এবং supervisor-এর কোনো newer বা more specific instruction থাকলে সেটিই priority পাবে।
