University of Helsinki Environmental Change and Global Sustainability Master’s Thesis Guide 2026-2027

University of Helsinki-এর Master’s Programme in Environmental Change and Global Sustainability (ECGS) একটি 120 ECTS, দুই বছরের interdisciplinary Master’s programme। Programme-টি sustainability science, environmental change এবং global sustainability-এর social dimension একসঙ্গে নিয়ে কাজ করে। এখানে thesis শুধু degree-এর শেষে লেখা একটি document নয়; core studies, methods, disciplinary module এবং common thesis seminar-এর সঙ্গে thesis process শুরু থেকেই connected।

এই guide 25 August 2026-এ verified current University of Helsinki sources এবং 1 August 2026 থেকে কার্যকর ECGS 2026-2030 curriculum ব্যবহার করে তৈরি। এটি শুধুমাত্র thesis guide। Admission eligibility, tuition fee, scholarship, application deadline বা language-test requirement এখানে intentionally include করা হয়নি।

ECGS-এর standard study track দুটি

Public programme page বর্তমানে দুইটি standard track দেখায়:

• Environmental Change (EC), যেখানে natural-science based environmental systems-এর ওপর জোর বেশি; এবং
• Global Sustainability (GS), যেখানে social sciences, governance, justice এবং socio-ecological sustainability-এর ওপর জোর বেশি।

2026-2030 curriculum-এ আরও একটি Biology subject-teacher route আছে, কিন্তু এটি relevant pedagogic study rights থাকা students-এর special route। তাই এটিকে EC ও GS-এর মতো সবার জন্য third ordinary track হিসেবে দেখানো ঠিক হবে না।

Programme interfaculty হওয়ায় degree title-ও module অনুযায়ী ভিন্ন হতে পারে। ECGS থেকে Master of Science, Master of Social Sciences, অথবা Master of Science (Agriculture and Forestry) degree হতে পারে। Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences responsible organisation, আর Agriculture and Forestry এবং Social Sciences faculties programme coordination-এ যুক্ত।

Current 120 ECTS structure

Standard EC এবং GS route-এ structure হলো:

• 30 ECTS core studies;
• 75 ECTS track-specific advanced studies, যার মধ্যে 30 ECTS thesis এবং 45 ECTS disciplinary module; এবং
• 15 ECTS electives।

Current curriculum-এ 5 ECTS Master’s thesis seminar core studies-এর অংশ। Seminar-এ research plan করা, thesis idea refine করা এবং peer/guiding teacher-এর সামনে work present করা হয়। তাই thesis planning second year-এর শেষ মুহূর্তের কাজ নয়।

Standard track অনুযায়ী thesis code:

• Environmental Change: ECGS-005 Master’s thesis;
• Global Sustainability: ECGS-006 Master’s thesis।

দুটিই 30 ECTS এবং grading scale 0-5।

Thesis-এর ধরন কী হতে পারে?

Current ECGS guidance অনুযায়ী thesis সাধারণত একটি empirical research project-এর ওপর ভিত্তি করে হয় এবং result-কে scientific literature-এর আলোকে critically discuss করতে হয়। তবে research question justify করলে theoretical বা literature-based thesis-ও করা যায়।

Empirical thesis-এর broad four-phase model হলো:

1. study design এবং planning;
2. data gathering;
3. data analysis; এবং
4. existing literature-এর আলোকে result interpretation ও discussion।

Data gathering fieldwork, laboratory work, modelling বা অন্য justified method হতে পারে। Global Sustainability thesis-এ interview, policy documents, survey বা qualitative material থাকতে পারে; Environmental Change thesis-এ ecological, environmental, field, laboratory বা modelling data থাকতে পারে। Method research question-এর সঙ্গে align হতে হবে।

30 ECTS thesis প্রায় 4.5 months full-time workload

Current curriculum একটি খুব useful workload benchmark দেয়: thesis design থেকে completion পর্যন্ত প্রায় 4.5 months, 800 hours, বা 20 weeks at 40 hours/week।

Recommended timing-ও দেওয়া আছে:

• first year-এর periods 3-4-এ research plan;
• first-year summer অথবা second-year periods 1-2-এ data gathering; এবং
• second-year period 3-এ data processing এবং writing।

Field season, organisation access, interviews বা time-sensitive environmental data থাকলে এই planning বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Late topic selection করলে পুরো project schedule চাপের মধ্যে পড়ে যেতে পারে।

Current page guidance প্রায় 20-40 pages

Current ECGS এবং Faculty guidance 30 ECTS thesis-এর জন্য approximately 20-40 pages এবং সাধারণভাবে 40-50 literature sources-এর কথা বলে। Literature-based thesis-এ usually অনেক বেশি sources প্রয়োজন হয়।

এই numbers-কে hard minimum বা maximum হিসেবে ব্যবহার করবেন না। University নিজেই বলে total length topic-এর ওপর depend করে। Maps, figures, tables, methods বা appendices বেশি থাকলে thesis structure অন্যরকম হতে পারে। Social-science theoretical thesis-এর structure-ও natural-science empirical thesis-এর মতো হবে না।

মূল লক্ষ্য হলো 30 ECTS scope-এর মধ্যে analytical, focused এবং scientifically complete work। শুধু page number পূরণ করার জন্য unnecessary text যোগ করা উচিত নয়।

Approved thesis plan ছাড়া project শুরু করা যাবে না

ECGS-এর current curriculum খুব clear: Master’s thesis plan approval পাওয়ার আগে thesis project শুরু করা যাবে না।

Current Faculty process-এ plan sign করেন:

• student;
• programme-এর thesis responsible person; এবং
• supervisor/supervisors।

Plan-এ research question, theory, material, methods, schedule, supervision arrangement এবং larger project হলে student’s independent contribution clear থাকা উচিত।

Current Faculty rule অনুযায়ী thesis plan maximum nine months valid থাকতে পারে। Plan expire হলে অথবা topic/supervisor/circumstances materially change হলে updated approval লাগতে পারে। তাই শুধু formality হিসেবে খুব early plan sign না করে, project বাস্তবে ready হলে plan finalize করা ভালো।

Supervisor requirement

At least one supervisor প্রয়োজন। Current Faculty guidance অনুযায়ী:

• chief supervisor-এর doctoral degree বা equivalent qualification থাকতে হবে; এবং
• additional supervisor থাকলে minimum Master’s degree থাকতে হবে।

Supervisor scope, theory, method এবং analysis নিয়ে guidance দেন, feedback দেন এবং research process support করেন। কিন্তু research, analysis এবং final writing-এর academic responsibility student-এর।

ECGS thesis University research group, broader project, company বা organisation collaboration-এর সঙ্গে করা যেতে পারে। তবে student’s independent contribution clearly assessable হতে হবে এবং thesis independently written হতে হবে।

Referencing: consistent system, কিন্তু universal APA/Harvard rule নয়

Current Faculty guidance একটি consistent referencing system require করে এবং বলে detailed style programme-level instructions থেকে আসবে। Verified current public ECGS evidence একটিমাত্র universal style, যেমন APA বা Harvard, সব thesis-এর জন্য require করে না।

তাই safest approach:

1. current ECGS/module-specific instruction থাকলে সেটি follow করুন;
2. supervisor-approved disciplinary convention ব্যবহার করুন; এবং
3. পুরো thesis-এ একই system consistently apply করুন।

Global Sustainability social-science thesis এবং Environmental Change natural-science thesis একই citation manual use করতেই হবে এমন assumption করবেন না, unless current programme instruction specifically বলে।

Thesis language

ECGS multilingual programme। Current information অনুযায়ী thesis English, Finnish বা Swedish-এ করা যায়।

তবে degree language গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Multilingual programme-এ English-language degree complete করলে at least 75% included studies English-এ complete করতে হবে এবং thesis English-এ লিখতে হবে।

Thesis language plan-এ record হয়। Finnish/Swedish degree বা prior language requirement থাকলে current University language rules check করুন।

Sisu এবং redesigned E-thesis

Final submission-এর আগে current instructions অনুযায়ী relevant academic year-এর জন্য thesis এবং maturity test Sisu-তে register করতে হবে।

এরপর final assessed version redesigned E-thesis-এ submit করতে হবে। E-thesis-এ assessment-এর জন্য thesis save হয়ে গেলে submitted version আর edit করা যায় না।

Final upload-এর আগে title, abstract, keywords, supervisor details, references, figures/tables, appendices, confidentiality এবং PDF rendering check করা জরুরি। ভুল file upload করলে simple post-submission edit option নেই।

ECGS examiner rule-এ একটি special exception আছে

Current Faculty framework-এ thesis-এর জন্য two examiners appoint করা হয় এবং minimum qualification normally doctoral degree বা equivalent।

Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences-এ supervisor normally examiner হতে পারেন না। কিন্তু ECGS explicit exception, কারণ programme joint/interfaculty। Justified reason থাকলে ECGS supervisor examiner হিসেবেও কাজ করতে পারেন।

Assessment-এর সাতটি area আছে:

1. objective এবং research questions;
2. scholarly framework এবং sources;
3. data এবং method;
4. results presentation;
5. discussion এবং conclusions;
6. thesis as academic text; এবং
7. thesis process-এর সময় কাজ।

Examiners areas 1-6 assess করেন, আর supervisor area 7 assess করেন। Final grade 0-5, এবং final approval/grade decision Dean দেন।

Maturity test abstract নয়, separate Examinarium exam

ECGS-এর ক্ষেত্রে অন্য programme-এর maturity-test process copy করা যাবে না। Current Faculty instructions অনুযায়ী Master’s maturity test হলো separate written examination, যেখানে Examinarium-এ essay task(s) complete করতে হয়।

Maturity test:

• 0 ECTS;
• pass/fail;
• thesis topic-এর familiarity demonstrate করে; এবং
• language requirement student’s prior education এবং degree-language situation-এর ওপর depend করে।

সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ rule: maturity test-এ AI কখনো allowed নয়। Thesis writing-এর অন্য stage-এ University rules অনুযায়ী limited/declared AI use possible হলেও maturity test-এ এই exception নেই।

Thesis-এ AI use

Current University policy সাধারণভাবে AI-based support allow করতে পারে যদি teacher/programme/Faculty rules permit করে। কিন্তু student accuracy, source checking, analysis এবং research integrity-এর জন্য responsible থাকে।

Permitted AI use করলে current disclosure rules follow করতে হবে। AI দিয়ে fabricated citation, unchecked factual claim বা student-এর own analytical responsibility replace করা যাবে না।

2026-2027 ECGS submission rounds

Current Faculty timetable অনুযায়ী completed thesis 23:59 Finnish time-এর মধ্যে submit করতে হবে।

July-তে normally supervision এবং feedback দেওয়া হয় না unless specific exception applies। Final June round-এর পরে thesis submit করলে assessment first autumn schedule অনুযায়ী হবে। তাই graduation planning শুধু upload date দিয়ে করবেন না; grade proposal এবং Dean decision date-ও ধরুন।

Publicity এবং confidential material

Master’s thesis public document এবং abstract-ও public। Abstract Helda-তে publicly available হয়। Full thesis open publication permit করলে current E-thesis/Helda process অনুযায়ী publish হতে পারে।

Confidential information thesis, appendix বা abstract-এ রাখা যাবে না। Company collaboration, personal data বা sensitive organisational material থাকলে research plan stage-এই confidentiality boundary supervisor-এর সঙ্গে resolve করুন। Examiners public thesis-এর ওপর assessment করেন।

Practical ECGS workflow

1. Track/module context clear করুন। EC, GS বা special subject-teacher route এবং degree title identify করুন।
2. Thesis seminar early use করুন। Broad sustainability issue-কে answerable research question-এ narrow করুন।
3. Suitable supervisor খুঁজুন। Disciplinary এবং methodological expertise match করুন।
4. Thesis plan তৈরি করুন। Question, theory, data/material, method, ethics, schedule এবং independent contribution define করুন।
5. Formal approval ছাড়া thesis project শুরু করবেন না।
6. Data/material collect করুন। Field/lab, modelling, interview, documents বা other justified evidence হতে পারে।
7. 30 ECTS scope অনুযায়ী analyse ও write করুন। 20-40 page guidance scale check, padding target নয়।
8. Consistent referencing system use করুন। Universal APA/Harvard assumption করবেন না।
9. Separate maturity test complete করুন। AI use করবেন না।
10. Sisu registration এবং final E-thesis upload complete করুন। File final কিনা নিশ্চিত করুন।
11. Assessment timeline allow করুন। Submission-এর পর examiner review এবং Dean decision-এর জন্য সময় রাখুন।

Final checklist

Submission-এর আগে নিশ্চিত করুন:

• thesis plan approved এবং valid;
• correct ECGS track/module/degree context selected;
• independent contribution clear;
• supervisor qualification current rule-এর সঙ্গে match করে;
• research question, theory, material এবং method aligned;
• thesis analytical এবং 30 ECTS scope-এর মধ্যে;
• 20-40 page guidance topic অনুযায়ী sensibly interpreted;
• referencing consistent এবং current programme/supervisor instruction অনুযায়ী;
• Sisu-তে thesis এবং maturity test registration correct;
• separate Examinarium maturity test complete;
• maturity test-এ AI use হয়নি;
• confidential material final thesis/appendix-এ নেই;
• E-thesis PDF exact final version; এবং
• selected submission date current 2026-2027 timetable-এর একটি valid round।

University, programme, Faculty এবং supervisor-এর more specific বা newer instruction সবসময় এই general guide-এর ওপর priority পাবে।
