Aalto University Water and Environmental Engineering Master’s Thesis Guide: 30 ECTS ENG process, research proposal এবং evaluation

Aalto University-এর Master’s Programme in Water and Environmental Engineering (WAT) School of Engineering-এর 120 ECTS Master of Science (Technology) programme। Current 2026–2028 curriculum অনুযায়ী degree structure হলো 60 ECTS major studies + 30 ECTS master’s thesis + 30 ECTS elective studies।

Current major code ENG29। Thesis code BE.thes, scope 30 ECTS। আলাদা ENG.matr maturity test 0 ECTS। Aalto thesis-এর জন্য second study year-এর spring semester recommend করে, তবে topic planning তার আগে শুরু করতে বলে।

WAT-এর তিনটি complementary study path আছে, কিন্তু এগুলো আলাদা thesis administration নয়। Water resources/environmental hydraulics, water and wastewater engineering, এবং water and development ভিন্ন topic ও method তৈরি করতে পারে, কিন্তু formal thesis process একই School of Engineering route follow করে।

Current process-এর মূল নিয়ম:

• written thesis individual work;
• 30 ECTS-এর planning baseline প্রায় six months full-time / প্রায় 800 hours;
• eligible supervisor-এর সঙ্গে one or two advisors থাকতে পারে;
• topic এবং supervision MyStudies-এ formalise হয়;
• ENG process-এ research proposal থাকে;
• approval-এর আগে finished thesis present করতে হয়;
• thesis abstract-ই maturity essay;
• final examined thesis PDF/A হিসেবে MyStudies দিয়ে submit হয়;
• grading scale 0–5; এবং
• formal approval/grade Degree Programme Committee decide করে।

Detailed operational ENG instructions authenticated MyCourses Master’s Thesis Guide-এ থাকে। এই guide public current sources-এর বাইরে hidden form বা internal model schedule reconstruct করে না।

Current WAT degree-এর মধ্যে thesis কোথায়

2026–2028 WAT major 60 ECTS। এর মধ্যে 12 ECTS compulsory studies এবং 48 ECTS current advanced offering থেকে select করা হয়। Compulsory WAT-E1001 Water and Environment Engineering course 12 ECTS।

Advanced studies hydrology, groundwater, surface-water resources, environmental hydraulics, water governance, sustainable built environment, water treatment, wastewater networks, biological treatment, process modelling, circularity এবং related areas-এর দিকে expertise build করতে দেয়।

Applicant-facing programme তিনটি broad study path describe করে। এগুলো topic orientation দেয়, কিন্তু আলাদা thesis approval system নয়। একজন flood risk বা hydrological modelling নিয়ে কাজ করতে পারে, আরেকজন water-treatment process, আরেকজন governance বা water security নিয়ে কাজ করতে পারে। সবাই BE.thes/ENG process-এর মধ্যে থাকবে।

Research design question অনুযায়ী বদলাবে; administrative thesis route বদলাবে না।

Second-year spring-এর আগে topic planning শুরু করুন

Aalto second-year spring thesis-এর জন্য recommend করে, কিন্তু topic আগে থেকেই ভাবতে বলে। WAT-এ এটি খুব practical advice।

Field measurement seasonal হতে পারে। Lab equipment booking লাগতে পারে। Utility বা municipal data access সময় নিতে পারে। Model calibration-এর জন্য data ready নাও থাকতে পারে। Interview বা stakeholder study করলে participant recruitment ও scheduling দরকার হতে পারে।

Programme professors current research-এর সঙ্গে linked topic দিতে পারেন। Student নিজের topic-ও potential supervisor-এর কাছে propose করতে পারে। Topic advanced studies-এর সঙ্গে related এবং supervisor-এর expertise-এর মধ্যে হওয়া দরকার।

Formal topic-এর আগে চারটি প্রশ্ন করুন:

1. Researchable কি? Practical water/environmental problem-কে clear academic question করা যায় কি?
2. Evidence আছে কি? Measurement, dataset, sample, document বা participant realistically পাওয়া যাবে কি?
3. Method fit করে কি? Proposed method question answer করতে পারবে কি?
4. Scope realistic কি? 30 ECTS এবং agreed schedule-এর মধ্যে কাজ শেষ হবে কি?

Topic narrow করা ambition কমানো নয়; এটি thesis-কে finishable করা।

তিনটি study path আলাদা thesis rule তৈরি করে না

WAT-এর breadth দেখে মনে হতে পারে specialisation অনুযায়ী আলাদা thesis process আছে। Current public sources সেটি support করে না।

Current curriculum-এ একটিই ENG29 major, একটিই 30 ECTS BE.thes, এবং 0 ECTS ENG.matr। আলাদা compulsory thesis-seminar ECTS course current curriculum-এ listed নয়।

Study path intellectual orientation হিসেবে useful:

• water resources/environmental hydraulics project field data, hydrological model, flow analysis বা temporal/spatial dataset ব্যবহার করতে পারে;
• water/wastewater engineering project laboratory experiment, treatment process, network analysis, process data বা design calculation ব্যবহার করতে পারে;
• water-and-development/governance thesis policy analysis, interviews, institutional evidence, quantitative data বা mixed methods ব্যবহার করতে পারে।

এগুলো example, mandatory template নয়। SPT-এর 5 ECTS thesis seminar বা Real Estate Economics-এর presentation format WAT-এ import করা যাবে না।

Supervisor এবং advisor structure ঠিকভাবে বুঝুন

Current School of Engineering policy অনুযায়ী professor ছাড়াও authorised adjunct professor, professor of practice, senior university lecturer এবং principal university lecturer thesis supervise করতে পারেন।

Thesis-এ one or two advisors থাকতে পারে। Advisor-এর অন্তত master’s degree থাকতে হবে। Advisor Aalto researcher, doctoral researcher, teacher, company specialist, consultant, municipal expert, utility professional বা অন্য relevant specialist হতে পারেন।

Supervisor university-এর academic responsibility বহন করেন। Advisor technical, empirical, organisational বা domain-specific guidance বেশি দিতে পারেন। External organisation-এর thesis হলে Aalto supervisor + external advisor একটি common practical structure হতে পারে।

External expert supervisor-এর academic role replace করেন না।

Written thesis individual হতে হবে

School of Engineering policy অনুযায়ী master’s thesis pair বা group written thesis হতে পারে না। Assessed written report individual।

একই research group, lab, utility project বা dataset-এ একাধিক student কাজ করতে পারে। কিন্তু প্রত্যেক student-এর research problem, contribution, analysis এবং written report independently defensible হতে হবে।

WAT team-based research environment-এ এই boundary গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। একই water system নিয়ে দুইজন কাজ করলেও কে কী analyse করেছে, কোন evidence use করেছে এবং কোন conclusion justify করেছে তা পরিষ্কার থাকতে হবে।

MyStudies-এ topic এবং supervision formalise করুন

Formal ENG thesis process MyStudies ব্যবহার করে। Topic step complete করার আগে intended supervisor ও advisor(s)-এর সঙ্গে topic agree করা উচিত।

MyStudies record-এ topic, supervisor, advisor arrangement এবং thesis language-এর মতো core information থাকে। Final submission, evaluation এবং archiving-এর সঙ্গেও এই record linked।

ENG guideline thesis stage-এ degree structure এবং study plan in order রাখার কথাও বলে। WAT এমনভাবে designed যে major studies-এর বড় অংশ first year-এ complete করা যায়।

Final month পর্যন্ত formal details pending রাখবেন না। MyStudies thesis process-এর অংশ।

Full execution-এর আগে research proposal বানান

School of Engineering process-এ research proposal গুরুত্বপূর্ণ stage। Broad interest-কে manageable project-এ convert করতে এটি দরকার।

Proposal-এ relevantভাবে থাকবে:

• background এবং theoretical/technical framework;
• research problem এবং question;
• main objective এবং intermediate objectives;
• evidence বা empirical material;
• research/design methods;
• timetable; এবং
• practical constraint বা budget, যদি relevant হয়।

WAT-এ feasibility concrete। Field measurement হলে measurement window কী? Treatment experiment হলে equipment/sample কী লাগবে? Utility data কে দেবে? Model calibration-এর data আছে কি? Interview হলে participant কারা?

Strong proposal project dependency early stage-এ visible করে।

Six months এবং প্রায় 800 hours-কে scope constraint হিসেবে নিন

School of Engineering 30 ECTS thesis-কে প্রায় six months full-time study হিসেবে ধরে এবং প্রায় 800 hours workload planning baseline ব্যবহার করে।

এটি stopwatch নয়। এটি scope control। Thesis master’s-level competence দেখাবে, কিন্তু open-ended research programme হবে না।

WAT-এ scope creep হতে পারে বেশি field variable collect করা, model কয়েকটি catchment-এ expand করা, অনেক treatment condition test করা, অনেক stakeholder group add করা বা thesis-কে consulting deliverable-এর বড় package বানানো থেকে।

Student, supervisor এবং advisor feasible schedule agree করবে। Agreed schedule significantly exceed করলে assessment প্রভাবিত হতে পারে, যদিও student-এর control-এর বাইরে delay আলাদাভাবে consider করা হয়।

Project-এর credible stopping point শুরুতেই define করুন।

Water বা environmental question অনুযায়ী method বেছে নিন

WAT সব thesis-এর জন্য এক method prescribe করে না। Method question ও evidence থেকে আসবে।

Hydrology project time-series analysis, watershed modelling, remote sensing বা field measurement ব্যবহার করতে পারে। Environmental hydraulics laboratory বা numerical flow analysis ব্যবহার করতে পারে। Water-treatment research bench experiment, process measurement, chemical/biological analysis বা modelling ব্যবহার করতে পারে। Network research hydraulic modelling ও system data ব্যবহার করতে পারে। Governance/development thesis policy analysis, interviews, survey, institutional data বা mixed methods ব্যবহার করতে পারে।

Core issue হলো alignment:

• question থেকে evidence requirement আসবে;
• evidence method-এর জন্য suitable হতে হবে;
• method question answer করার মতো result দেবে; এবং
• conclusion evidence-এর বাইরে যাবে না।

Previous thesis method copy করার আগে নিজের research question-এর সঙ্গে fit check করুন।

Company, utility এবং commissioned thesis academic ও public থাকে

WAT consulting, utility, municipality, public agency, research organisation এবং industry-এর সঙ্গে naturally connected। Commissioned thesis relevant problem access করতে সাহায্য করতে পারে।

External partner data, sample, site, system বা expert knowledge দিতে পারে। কিন্তু thesis Aalto academic work-ই থাকে এবং ENG evaluation criteria satisfy করতে হবে।

Evaluated master’s thesis public document। Confidential partner information, infrastructure security detail, personal data বা commercial secret evaluated thesis-এর মধ্যে রেখে পরে thesis secret করা যায় না।

Data collection-এর আগে confidentiality boundary ঠিক করুন। Sensitive material assessed thesis-এর বাইরে রাখতে হতে পারে। Public report-এ research problem, legally usable evidence, method, analysis এবং conclusions থাকবে।

Aaltodoc full text immediately open না করার choice thesis-কে confidential করে না।

Literature, Turnitin এবং AI responsibly ব্যবহার করুন

WAT thesis relevant scientific এবং professional literature-এর ওপর build হবে। Topic অনুযায়ী peer-reviewed water research, engineering standard, modelling literature, technical report বা policy document ব্যবহার হতে পারে।

Turnitin source-use/originality checking support করে। Similarity percentage নিজে plagiarism verdict নয়; quotation, reference এবং common technical language similarity তৈরি করতে পারে। Report context-এ interpret করতে হয়।

Citation, paraphrasing, data integrity, calculation, model choice এবং final accuracy-এর responsibility student-এর।

AI use current Aalto/thesis rule follow করবে। Confidential research data বা personal information unapproved public AI service-এ দেবেন না। সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ: current guidance অনুযায়ী maturity test-এ language model permitted নয়।

Approval-এর আগে thesis presentation complete করুন

Current WAT curriculum এবং thesis page 30 ECTS entity-এর মধ্যে presentation রাখে। ENG guideline অনুযায়ী finished thesis supervisor-এর সঙ্গে agreed time-এ present করতে হয়।

Presentation বা equivalent event thesis approval application-এর last day-এর পরে হতে পারে না।

Public WAT page fixed presentation calendar, mandatory slide count বা universal duration publish করে না। Real Estate Economics-এর 5–10 minute video rule বা SPT-এর 15+15 minute format WAT-এর rule নয়।

Final weeks plan করার সময় supervisor ও current ENG MyCourses instruction follow করুন।

Abstract-ই maturity essay

School of Engineering-এ thesis abstract maturity essay হিসেবে কাজ করে। Supervisor abstract দেখে topic এবং field সম্পর্কে student-এর knowledge evaluate করেন।

Previous education অনুযায়ী Finnish বা Swedish language check লাগতে পারে। ENG guideline required language check-এর জন্য প্রায় 14 days reserve করতে বলে।

Maturity essay pass/fail basis-এ assess হয়। Abstract assessed maturity component হওয়ায় language-model prohibition এখানে directly apply করে।

Abstract submission-time afterthought নয়; academic requirement হিসেবে finalise করুন।

Final thesis PDF/A হিসেবে MyStudies দিয়ে submit করুন

School of Engineering final thesis MyStudies দিয়ে electronically submit করে। Current ENG guideline final examined file PDF/A হতে বলে।

Final submission-এর আগে topic/supervision approved, presentation complete, maturity abstract ready এবং supervisor review-এর জন্য যথেষ্ট সময় থাকা উচিত।

Approved thesis Aaltodoc-এ archive হয়। Full-text online consent এবং public-document status আলাদা বিষয়।

Deadline-এর আগেই PDF/A validate করুন।

Thesis কীভাবে grade হয়

School of Engineering scale:

• 0 = fail;
• 1 = passable;
• 2 = satisfactory;
• 3 = good;
• 4 = very good;
• 5 = excellent।

Supervisor written evaluation statement এবং proposed grade দেন। Formal approval এবং grade Degree Programme Committee decide করে।

Evaluation শুধু technical result useful কি না দেখে না। Research problem, scope/goals, theory/source command, method, empirical material, analysis/conclusion, structure/presentation এবং independent project performance consider করা হয়।

Grade 1, 5 বা fail proposal-এর ক্ষেত্রে additional independent academic consultation/second-examiner step লাগে। Submitted thesis সাধারণত চার সপ্তাহের মধ্যে evaluate করার expectation থাকে।

Supervisor review-এর জন্য deadline-এর আগে সময় রাখুন

Administrative deadline-এর দিন first complete manuscript supervisor-কে দেওয়া safe plan নয়।

Backward planning করুন:

1. complete manuscript;
2. supervisor/advisor feedback;
3. corrections;
4. finished-thesis presentation;
5. maturity abstract এবং possible language check;
6. PDF/A validation; এবং
7. MyStudies evaluation application।

Field বা experimental WAT project-এ extra buffer useful, কারণ analysis stage-এ missing measurement, failed experiment বা model problem ধরা পড়তে পারে। Problem early raise করলে deadline protect করা সহজ।

Current programme-specific thesis deadlines

30 August 2026 verification অনুযায়ী WAT-এর remaining public thesis-evaluation deadlines:

• 28 September 2026 -> Degree Programme Committee 19 October 2026;
• 23 November 2026 -> committee 14 December 2026; এবং
• 31 December 2026 -> committee January 2027।

WAT graduation page-এ কিছু graduation-only date আছে যেখানে committee meeting নেই। সেসব date ব্যবহার করতে thesis এবং maturity আগে approved ও registered থাকতে হবে।

Current WAT programme page complete programme-specific 2027 thesis-evaluation calendar publish করেনি। তাই অন্য ENG programme বা generic calendar-এর date WAT committee deadline হিসেবে এই guide ব্যবহার করে না।

Practical WAT thesis workflow

1. HOPS এবং first-year progress review করুন। Intended topic-এর জন্য major foundation যথেষ্ট কি না দেখুন।
2. WAT study paths/research areas explore করুন। Topic খুঁজতে ব্যবহার করুন, আলাদা thesis rule বানাতে নয়।
3. Topic discussion early শুরু করুন। Aalto research এবং external water-sector project দুইটাই consider করুন।
4. Eligible supervisor এবং advisor structure ঠিক করুন। Academic responsibility এবং day-to-day expertise আলাদা করুন।
5. MyStudies-এ topic/supervision formalise করুন। Record current রাখুন।
6. Research proposal বানান। Question, evidence, method, scope এবং schedule lock করুন।
7. Six-month-scale project execute করুন। 30 ECTS boundary protect করুন।
8. Supervision actively ব্যবহার করুন। Data, lab, modelling বা access problem early raise করুন।
9. Complete manuscript early দিন। Review এবং corrections-এর জন্য weeks reserve করুন।
10. Finished-thesis presentation complete করুন। WAT/ENG current arrangement follow করুন।
11. Maturity abstract finalise করুন। Language rule এবং language-model prohibition মানুন।
12. PDF/A validate করে MyStudies-এ submit করুন। Live deadline recheck করুন।
13. Degree Programme Committee approval-এর জন্য সময় দিন। Submission আর approval আলাদা stage।
14. Sisu-তে graduation request দিন। Study plan approved এবং attendance valid রাখুন।

Final checklist

Final submission-এর আগে confirm করুন:

• thesis current 30 ECTS BE.thes under ENG29;
• ENG.matr আলাদা 0 ECTS maturity requirement;
• invented WAT thesis-seminar credit add করা হয়নি;
• written thesis individual;
• supervisor current ENG eligibility satisfy করেন;
• advisor থাকলে অন্তত master’s degree আছে;
• MyStudies topic/supervision complete;
• research proposal feasible question, evidence, method এবং schedule define করে;
• scope six-month / ~800-hour baseline-এর মধ্যে realistic;
• method actual water/environmental question-এর সঙ্গে fit করে;
• confidential partner/personal data public assessed thesis-এর বাইরে রাখা হয়েছে যেখানে দরকার;
• citation, Turnitin এবং integrity issue resolve করা হয়েছে;
• finished-thesis presentation complete;
