Aalto University Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering Master’s Thesis Guide: 30 ECTS thesis, 5 ECTS thesis seminar এবং SPT presentation process

Aalto University-এর Master’s Programme in Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering (SPT) School of Engineering-এর 120 ECTS Master of Science (Technology) programme। Current 2026–2028 curriculum-এ spatial planning, land-use planning এবং transportation engineering-এর ভিন্ন academic focus থাকলেও thesis administration-এর জন্য একটি shared ENG route আছে।

Current degree structure হলো 60 ECTS major studies + 30 ECTS master’s thesis + 30 ECTS elective studies। 60 ECTS major-এর মধ্যে SPT-E1061 Thesis Seminar একটি compulsory 5 ECTS second-year course। Actual thesis হলো আলাদা BE.thes Master's Thesis, 30 ECTS, আর ENG.matr Maturity Test 0 ECTS।

এটি খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ distinction। 5 ECTS thesis seminar thesis-কে 35 ECTS বানায় না। Seminar major studies-এর অংশ, thesis আলাদা 30 ECTS assessed research project।

Current SPT thesis route-এর মূল controls:

• written thesis individual academic work;
• normal baseline প্রায় six months full-time / প্রায় 800 hours;
• recommended main thesis period second-year spring, তবে topic search তার আগে শুরু করতে হবে;
• authorised supervisor এবং one or two advisors থাকতে পারে;
• topic ও supervision approval MyStudies দিয়ে হয়;
• ENG process-এ research proposal থাকে;
• approval-এর আগে finished thesis present করতে হয়;
• SPT staff-hosted presentation এবং agreed public-video alternative দুটোই publish করে;
• thesis abstract-ই maturity essay;
• final thesis PDF/A হিসেবে MyStudies দিয়ে submit হয়;
• grading scale 0–5; এবং
• formal approval Degree Programme Committee দেয়।

Detailed ENG Master’s Thesis Guide authenticated MyCourses-এ থাকে। এই guide public current information ব্যবহার করে, login-only form বা model schedule invent করে না।

Current SPT degree-এর মধ্যে thesis কোথায়

Current major code ENG26। Programme spatial planning, land-use planning, transportation engineering, policy, systems thinking এবং urban/regional analysis combine করে।

Current major-এ 35 ECTS compulsory studies এবং 25 ECTS chosen advanced studies আছে। Compulsory block-এর মধ্যে planning systems, plangineering, planning theory, land-use and transport policy, planning studio এবং 5 ECTS SPT-E1061 Thesis Seminar আছে।

Student spatial planning-এর দিকে বেশি focus করতে পারে, transportation engineering-এর দিকে যেতে পারে, অথবা integrated profile বানাতে পারে। কিন্তু academic focus বদলালেও thesis administration আলাদা route হয়ে যায় না।

Recommended timetable অনুযায়ী first academic year-এ major studies-এর বেশিরভাগ শেষ করা উচিত, শুধু thesis seminar ছাড়া। Second year electives এবং thesis-এর জন্য থাকে, এবং second-year spring মূলত thesis-এর জন্য রাখা হয়।

Separate 5 ECTS Thesis Seminar ঠিকভাবে বুঝুন

SPT-E1061 Thesis Seminar current curriculum-এ 5 ECTS compulsory major course, second year-এর periods I–V জুড়ে taught। এটি 30 ECTS thesis-এর অন্য নাম নয় এবং BE.thes-এর সঙ্গে যোগ হয়ে 35 ECTS thesis হয় না।

Study plan-এ তিনটি item আলাদাভাবে বুঝুন:

• SPT-E1061 Thesis Seminar: major-এর মধ্যে 5 ECTS;
• BE.thes Master's Thesis: আলাদা 30 ECTS; এবং
• ENG.matr Maturity Test: 0 ECTS।

Seminar second-year thesis work support করে। Main thesis execution second-year spring recommend করা হলেও topic planning আরও আগে শুরু করা উচিত।

Second-year spring-এর অনেক আগে topic planning শুরু করুন

Current SPT thesis page topic selection নিয়ে useful guidance দেয়। Student-কে ভাবতে বলা হয় কী বিষয়ে interest আছে, কী শিখতে চায়, কোন research method ব্যবহার করতে আগ্রহী, এবং সেই method data availability ও topic scope-এ কী limitation তৈরি করে।

Independent university thesis আর city/company thesis-এর practical difference-ও early stage-এ বুঝতে হবে। External organisation involved হলে topic এবং timetable employer-এর সঙ্গে discuss করতে হবে, কিন্তু academic supervisor-এর approvalও লাগবে।

Topic fix করার আগে academic literature পড়ে research gap identify করতে বলা হয়েছে। Recent master’s thesis-এ একই topic already covered হয়েছে কি না সেটিও check করা উচিত। একই area হলে নতুন contribution স্পষ্ট হতে হবে।

Useful topic test:

1. Problem: ঠিক কোন planning, mobility বা transport problem investigate করা হচ্ছে?
2. Gap: Existing research বা recent thesis-এর তুলনায় কী এখনও unresolved?
3. Evidence: Data, interview, document, spatial evidence বা model realistically পাওয়া যাবে কি?
4. Method: Chosen method master’s-thesis scale-এর মধ্যে question answer করতে পারবে কি?
5. Contribution: Study knowledge, planning practice, engineering analysis বা policy understanding-এ কী যোগ করবে?
6. Feasibility: Six-month-scale workload-এর মধ্যে কাজ শেষ করা যাবে কি?

Broad topic clear হলে SPT professors appropriate supervisor খুঁজতে help করতে পারেন।

Supervisor এবং advisor structure ঠিকভাবে বেছে নিন

Current School of Engineering framework অনুযায়ী professor ছাড়াও authorised adjunct professor, professor of practice, senior university lecturer এবং principal university lecturer thesis supervise করতে পারেন।

Thesis-এ one or two advisors থাকতে পারে। Advisor-এর অন্তত master’s degree থাকতে হবে। Advisor Aalto researcher বা academic specialist হতে পারেন, আবার city, consultancy, company, transport operator বা public organisation-এর expert-ও হতে পারেন।

Supervisor university-এর academic responsibility বহন করেন। Advisor practical, technical, methodological বা organisational guidance বেশি দিতে পারেন। External commissioner থাকলেও authorised Aalto supervisor academic control রাখেন।

Written thesis individual হতে হবে

School of Engineering master’s thesis individual written work। Pair বা group হিসেবে একসঙ্গে written thesis submit করা যায় না।

Broader project collaborative হতে পারে। দুই student একই transport dataset, municipality project বা research programme-এর আলাদা question নিয়ে কাজ করতে পারে। কিন্তু প্রত্যেক thesis-এর research question, scope, contribution, analysis এবং written report independently defensible হতে হবে।

SPT professional work naturally collaborative হলেও assessed academic thesis shared report হয়ে যায় না।

MyStudies-এ topic এবং supervision formalise করুন

Formal thesis topic, supervisor এবং advisor information MyStudies-এ approve করা হয়। Approval request-এর আগে intended supervisor/advisor-এর সঙ্গে topic agree করে নেওয়া উচিত।

HOPS ও degree structure current রাখা দরকার। Missing compulsory major study, incomplete seminar, unapproved elective বা outdated study plan graduation-এর কাছে সমস্যা তৈরি করতে পারে।

MyStudies supervision ও topic থেকে final submission, evaluation এবং archiving workflow-এর সঙ্গে connected। তাই thesis record updated রাখা useful।

Full execution-এর আগে research proposal বানান

School of Engineering process-এ research proposal broad interest-কে executable academic project-এ convert করে।

Proposal-এ relevantভাবে থাকতে পারে:

• background এবং theoretical framework;
• research problem/question;
• main এবং interim objectives;
• methods এবং evidence;
• timetable/milestones; এবং
• practical resource বা budget constraints।

SPT thesis-এ feasibility প্রায়ই data access-এর ওপর নির্ভর করে। Transport modelling-এর জন্য network বা travel-demand data লাগতে পারে। Planning thesis-এ interview, policy document, spatial dataset বা local planning process access লাগতে পারে। Commissioned thesis-এ কিছু organisational information public document-এ ব্যবহার করা নাও যেতে পারে।

এই constraint proposal stage-এ clear করলে মাঝপথে project redesign-এর risk কমে।

Six months এবং প্রায় 800 hours-কে scope constraint হিসেবে নিন

Aalto-এর SPT applicant page 30 ECTS thesis সাধারণত six months full-time work বলে। School of Engineering guideline approximate total workload about 800 hours বলে।

এগুলো mechanical hour-counting rule নয়। Practical meaning হলো scope discipline। Thesis open-ended city strategy, consulting assignment বা transport-system project হয়ে যাওয়া উচিত নয়। Research question, evidence boundary, method, deliverables এবং timetable clear থাকতে হবে।

Supervisor, advisor এবং student feasible schedule agree করবে। Avoidableভাবে agreed schedule অনেক exceed করলে grade affect হতে পারে, আর student-এর control-এর বাইরে delay appropriately consider করতে হবে।

Formally topic approval-এর পর সর্বোচ্চ এক বছরের deadline agree করা সম্ভব হলেও normal planning baseline six-month-scale project-ই।

Planning বা transport question অনুযায়ী method বেছে নিন

SPT কোনো single universal thesis method prescribe করে না। Programme planning theory, transport engineering, policy, participation, modelling, systems thinking এবং urban analysis cover করে।

Spatial-planning thesis interview, document analysis, institutional analysis, participatory methods, spatial analysis, comparative case study বা mixed methods ব্যবহার করতে পারে। Transportation thesis modelling, mobility data, simulation, accessibility analysis, optimisation, survey বা policy analysis ব্যবহার করতে পারে। Integrated thesis দুই ধরনের evidence combine করতে পারে।

Core principle হলো alignment:

• research question evidence নির্ধারণ করবে;
• evidence method-এর জন্য suitable হতে হবে;
• method question answer করতে সক্ষম হতে হবে; এবং
• conclusion evidence-এর সীমার মধ্যে থাকতে হবে।

Public SPT guidance topic define করার সময় qualitative এবং quantitative method দুটোই consider করতে বলে, কিন্তু কোনোটিকেই compulsory route করে না।

City, company এবং commissioned thesis academic ও public-ই থাকে

SPT city, company এবং অন্য external partner-এর সঙ্গে thesis করার সুযোগ recognise করে। Applicant page public/private organisation-এর research-and-development project-কেও legitimate thesis context বলে।

External collaboration practical problem, real data এবং professional expertise দিতে পারে। কিন্তু university academic rules replace করতে পারে না। Student-কে independent thesis লিখতে হবে, defensible research design ব্যবহার করতে হবে এবং ENG evaluation criteria meet করতে হবে।

Evaluated master’s thesis public document। Commercial secret, restricted organisational information বা confidential personal data thesis-এর মধ্যে রেখে commissioner-এর agreement দিয়ে hide করা যাবে না।

Confidentiality boundary early stage-এ resolve করা উচিত। Sensitive background assessed thesis-এর বাইরে থাকতে পারে, public thesis lawful evidence, analysis এবং conclusion রাখবে।

Aaltodoc-এ full text openly publish না করার choice thesis-কে confidential করে না।

Literature, Turnitin এবং AI responsibly ব্যবহার করুন

SPT page research gap confirm করার জন্য academic literature পড়তে বলে। Practical planning problem academic thesis হতে হলে prior research-এর সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক দেখাতে হবে।

Literature review existing knowledge, theoretical/analytical frame এবং thesis-এর contribution establish করবে। Source accurately cite এবং interpret করতে হবে।

Turnitin source-use checking support করতে পারে। Similarity percentage নিজে misconduct verdict নয়; correct quotation, reference এবং common technical wording-ও similarity তৈরি করতে পারে। Contextual interpretation দরকার।

Student citation, paraphrasing, evidence integrity এবং submitted work-এর accuracy-এর জন্য দায়ী। AI use current Aalto এবং thesis-specific rules follow করবে। বিশেষভাবে, maturity test-এ language model ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।

Approval-এর আগে SPT thesis presentation complete করুন

SPT public page presentation নিয়ে programme-specific detail দেয়। Thesis evaluation-এর আগে supervisor-এর সঙ্গে presentation date well in advance agree করা উচিত।

Presentation সাধারণত Monday-তে, application deadline date-এ হয়। Date agree হওয়ার পরে final thesis title এবং short description presentation invitation-এর জন্য অন্তত এক সপ্তাহ আগে দিতে বলা হয়েছে।

Presentation-এ briefly cover করা উচিত:

• কী study করা হয়েছে এবং research question/background;
• data এবং methods;
• main results; এবং
• student কী শিখেছে।

SPT দুইটি route publish করে।

Staff-hosted presentation

Approximately 15 minutes presentation + about 15 minutes discussion, সাধারণত 8–12 slides suggested।

Video presentation

Supervisor-এর সঙ্গে advance agreement থাকলে 10–15 minute video presentation alternative হতে পারে। Current guidance অনুযায়ী প্রায় 8–12 slides explain করতে হবে, Aalto এবং advisor/supervisor identify করতে হবে, student নিজে speak করবে এবং video-এর অন্তত কিছু অংশে face visible থাকবে।

Video link applicable deadline-এর মধ্যে দিতে হয় এবং thesis approval না হওয়া পর্যন্ত publicly viewable রাখতে হয়।

এই presentation mechanics SPT-specific। অন্য ENG programme-এর format SPT-তে copy করা উচিত নয়।

Abstract-ই maturity essay

School of Engineering-এ thesis abstract maturity essay হিসেবে কাজ করে। ENG.matr 0 ECTS হলেও এটি required degree component।

Supervisor maturity text-এর thesis-field knowledge check করেন। Previous education এবং Finnish/Swedish proficiency আগে demonstrate করা হয়েছে কি না তার ওপর language checking depend করতে পারে।

Abstract assessed component হওয়ায় একে last-minute summary হিসেবে দেখা উচিত নয়। Current Aalto guidance অনুযায়ী maturity test-এ language model ব্যবহার prohibited।

Final thesis PDF/A হিসেবে MyStudies দিয়ে submit করুন

School of Engineering thesis electronically MyStudies দিয়ে submit করা হয়। Final file archival PDF/A version হতে হবে।

Final evaluation-এর আগে topic/supervision approved, presentation complete এবং maturity abstract ready থাকা উচিত। First complete manuscript administrative deadline-এর অনেক আগে supervisor-এর কাছে দেওয়া দরকার। ENG guidance অনুযায়ী thorough review প্রায় four weeks লাগতে পারে, এবং correction-এর জন্যও সময় রাখতে হবে।

Final MyStudies version evaluation ও archiving process-এ যায়। Approved thesis Aaltodoc-এ archive হয়। Full-text online consent আর public-document status আলাদা বিষয়।

Thesis কীভাবে grade হয়

School of Engineering thesis grading scale 0–5:

• 0 = fail;
• 1 = passable;
• 2 = satisfactory;
• 3 = good;
• 4 = very good; এবং
• 5 = excellent।

Supervisor written evaluation statement এবং proposed grade দেন। Degree Programme Committee formal approval ও grade decide করে।

Evaluation শুধু interesting map, model বা recommendation দেখে না। Research scope/goals, topic command, methods/conclusions, contribution/structure, project performance, independence, presentation এবং language বিবেচনা করা হয়।

Certain boundary grade proposal যেমন 1, 5 বা fail হলে additional independent academic consultation দরকার হয়।

Review এবং administrative approval-এর জন্য যথেষ্ট সময় রাখুন

ENG process-এ full manuscript review-এর জন্য meaningful time দরকার এবং submitted thesis সাধারণত চার সপ্তাহের মধ্যে evaluate করার expectation আছে।

Desired committee deadline থেকে backwards plan করলে রাখুন:

1. complete manuscript;
2. supervisor/advisor review;
3. corrections;
4. SPT presentation বা approved video;
5. maturity abstract;
6. PDF/A preparation;
7. MyStudies evaluation application; এবং
8. Degree Programme Committee approval।

Application deadline-এর কয়েক দিন আগে first full manuscript দেওয়া responsible planning নয়।

Current SPT thesis-evaluation deadlines

30 August 2026-এ verified current SPT page অনুযায়ী remaining 2026 thesis-evaluation deadlines:

• 28 September 2026, committee 19 October 2026;
• 23 November 2026, committee 14 December 2026; এবং
• 31 December 2026, committee January 2027।

Graduation page-এ কিছু graduation-only date with no committee meeting আছে। এগুলো new thesis-evaluation deadline নয়। ওই graduation date ব্যবহার করতে হলে thesis এবং maturity আগে approved/registered থাকতে হবে।

Current SPT pages এখনও full programme-specific 2027 thesis-evaluation calendar publish করেনি। তাই এই guide অন্য ENG programme থেকে 2027 dates borrow করে না।

2027 completion plan করলে live SPT Thesis/Graduation pages এবং authenticated ENG guide recheck করতে হবে।

Practical SPT thesis workflow

1. HOPS এবং second-year timetable review করুন। SPT-E1061 এবং separate 30 ECTS thesis ঠিকভাবে place করুন।
2. Topic search early শুরু করুন। Second-year spring পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করবেন না।
3. Recent literature এবং theses পড়ুন। Research gap এবং distinct contribution identify করুন।
4. Eligible supervisor-এর সঙ্গে topic discuss করুন। SPT professors supervisor match করতে help করতে পারেন।
5. Advisor দরকার হলে arrange করুন। External expertise useful হতে পারে, কিন্তু Aalto supervisor academic control রাখেন।
6. MyStudies-এ topic/supervision approval নিন। Record updated রাখুন।
7. Research proposal তৈরি করুন। Problem, literature, evidence, method এবং timetable lock করুন।
8. Six-month-scale individual project execute করুন। Scope control করুন।
9. Supervision actively ব্যবহার করুন। Data/method problem early solve করুন।
10. Full manuscript review-এর জন্য আগে দিন। Weeks reserve করুন।
11. SPT presentation complete করুন। Staff-hosted বা approved video route ব্যবহার করুন।
12. Abstract/maturity finalise করুন। Language এবং AI restrictions follow করুন।
13. Final PDF/A MyStudies দিয়ে submit করুন। Live deadline recheck করুন।
14. Committee approval-এর জন্য সময় রাখুন। Submission এবং approval আলাদা stage।
15. Degree ready হলে Sisu-তে graduation apply করুন। Study plan এবং attendance valid রাখুন।

Core planning principle হলো: SPT-কে one shared School of Engineering thesis route হিসেবে follow করুন, কিন্তু programme-specific thesis seminar, topic-planning এবং presentation mechanics আলাদাভাবে respect করুন। Spatial planning, transport engineering বা integrated research যাই হোক, clear gap, feasible evidence, defensible method, controlled scope এবং disciplined ENG process completion-ই strong thesis-এর ভিত্তি।
