Aalto University Mathematics and Operations Research Master’s Thesis Guide: তিনটি major-এর জন্য shared 30 ECTS SCI thesis process

Aalto University-এর Master’s Programme in Mathematics and Operations Research School of Science-এর 120 ECTS Master of Science (Technology) programme। Current 2026–2028 curriculum-এ তিনটি major আছে: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, এবং Systems and Operations Research।

এই তিন major academically আলাদা হলেও thesis administration shared। Aalto Student Guide স্পষ্টভাবে বলে programme-এর materials ও instructions সব major-এর জন্য প্রযোজ্য, এবং current curriculum তিনটিকেই একই School of Science thesis section-এর অধীনে রাখে। তাই শুধু major আলাদা বলে তিনটি আলাদা administrative thesis process বানানো ঠিক হবে না।

Current structure:

• Master’s thesis: 30 ECTS;
• thesis একটি individual research project;
• topic সাধারণত major-related, special case-এ minor-related হতে পারে;
• এক supervisor এবং প্রয়োজনে এক বা দুই advisor;
• workload baseline প্রায় six months full-time;
• formal start: MyStudies-এ supervisor, topic ও advisor approval;
• presentation এবং thesis abstract/maturity essay complete করতে হয়;
• final thesis MyStudies-এ accepted PDF/A format-এ submit হয়;
• supervisor evaluation/statement-এর পরে Degree Programme Committee thesis approve করে; এবং
• approved thesis Aaltodoc-এ archive হয়।

MathOR degree-এর মধ্যে thesis কোথায় থাকে

Degree total 120 ECTS এবং thesis 30 ECTS। Major 40–65 ECTS হতে পারে। Mathematics ও Applied Mathematics compact বা long major হিসেবে করা যায়। Systems and Operations Research শুধু compact major। Compact major নিলে 20–25 ECTS minor-ও degree-তে রাখতে হয়।

এই degree-structure difference thesis administration বদলায় না। তিন major-এর thesis একই 30 ECTS shared SCI process follow করে।

Thesis English, Finnish বা Swedish-এ লেখা যায়। Thesis-এর language degree-এর language নির্ধারণ করে। Formal topic approval-এর সময় full 120 ECTS HOPS coherent ও approved থাকা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

তিন major-এর academic thesis nature আলাদা হতে পারে

Mathematics thesis অনেক বেশি theoretical হতে পারে। Proof, rigorous argument, mathematical structure, theorem বা literature-based mathematical development main contribution হতে পারে।

Applied Mathematics thesis mathematical theory-এর সঙ্গে computation, statistics, numerical methods, modelling, simulation বা scientific application যুক্ত করতে পারে।

Systems and Operations Research thesis optimisation, simulation, decision analysis, risk, stochastic systems, resource allocation, networks বা organisational problem নিয়ে হতে পারে।

তাই shared process মানে shared methodology নয়। Aalto public guidance সব MathOR thesis-এর জন্য এক universal research method, chapter structure, page count বা citation style prescribe করে না। Actual question ও field convention অনুযায়ী design করতে হবে।

30 ECTS মানে প্রায় six months full-time workload

Current SCI Master’s Thesis Guide 30 ECTS thesis-কে প্রায় six months of full-time studies হিসেবে বর্ণনা করে। এটি workload baseline।

Aalto সাধারণভাবে second study year-এর autumn-এ thesis orient ও plan করতে এবং spring-এ writing/submission complete করতে recommend করে। তবে own study plan বা collaborative partner-এর schedule অনুযায়ী অন্য timingও possible।

Theoretical mathematics-এ proof development unpredictable হতে পারে। Applied work-এ data, computation বা software implementation delay করতে পারে। Operations research-এ organisational data, model validation বা partner decision cycle calendar influence করতে পারে। তাই six-month workload-এর সঙ্গে realistic buffer রাখা ভালো।

Formal start-এর আগে bachelor degree, attendance ও HOPS

SCI guidance অনুযায়ী formal topic approval শুরু করার আগে:

• BSc degree registered থাকা উচিত;
• student attending হিসেবে enrolled থাকতে হবে; এবং
• total 120 ECTS HOPS Sisu-তে completed/approved থাকা উচিত।

এগুলো thesis-কে degree structure-এর সঙ্গে align রাখে। Compact major হলে minor কীভাবে fit করছে, long major হলে advanced studies কতটা complete, এবং remaining compulsory studies thesis calendar-এর সঙ্গে conflict করছে কি না আগে check করা ভালো।

Topic কীভাবে নির্ধারণ করবেন

Programme thesis page অনুযায়ী thesis topic student-এর major-এর সঙ্গে related হবে এবং topic-specialist professor-এর সঙ্গে agree করা হবে। Special case-এ minor-related topicও possible।

Working topic এবং final title identical হওয়া বাধ্যতামূলক নয়। Main requirement হলো student ও supervisor topic এবং scope নিয়ে একই understanding share করবে। Research develop হওয়ার সঙ্গে final title refine হতে পারে।

Mathematics-এ field ও precise problem দিয়ে শুরু হতে পারে। Applied Mathematics-এ modelling/computation problem দিয়ে। Systems and Operations Research-এ optimisation বা decision problem দিয়ে।

Supervisor ও advisor-এর role

প্রতিটি thesis-এ একজন supervisor লাগে। Current curriculum supervisor-কে Aalto professor হিসেবে describe করে, যিনি School of Science requirements fulfil হচ্ছে কি না নিশ্চিত করেন। Wider SCI guidance অনুযায়ী supervisor সাধারণত professor, university lecturer বা senior university lecturer।

এক বা দুই advisor থাকতে পারে। Advisor-এর কমপক্ষে master’s degree থাকতে হবে। Advisor thesis content ও writing বিষয়ে expertise দেয় এবং অনেক সময় commissioning organisation-এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত থাকে। Supervisor নিজেও advisor role নিতে পারেন।

Thesis independent task। Supervisor student-এর হয়ে research decision নেবেন বা thesis rewrite করতে থাকবেন, এমন expectation ঠিক নয়। Student নিজের progress ও research quality-এর জন্য responsible।

MyStudies-এ official collaboration শুরু করুন

Preliminary topic ও supervision agree হওয়ার পরে MyStudies-এ supervisor, topic ও advisor(s)-এর approval apply করতে হয়। Current SCI guidance supervisor approval-কে thesis work-এর formal starting point বলে।

Initial approval application ও final thesis evaluation application একই সঙ্গে submit করা যায় না। Supervisor approval-এর পরে Learning Services administrative check করে এবং presentation, maturity, abstract ও thesis code সম্পর্কিত information দেয়।

তাই approval শেষ মুহূর্ত পর্যন্ত ফেলে রাখা উচিত নয়।

Major অনুযায়ী research plan বানান

Theoretical thesis-এ research plan mathematical objects, question, known results, possible proof strategy এবং relevant literature clarify করতে পারে।

Applied thesis-এ modelling assumptions, data/simulation input, numerical method, evaluation criteria এবং research question-এর সঙ্গে result link দেখানো দরকার।

Operations research thesis-এ real decision problem ও mathematical model আলাদা করে define করুন। Objective, constraints, uncertainty, data, solution method এবং validation logic পরিষ্কার হওয়া উচিত।

সব ক্ষেত্রে alignment useful: question → framework → method → evidence/argument → conclusion।

Company বা commissioned thesis

External organisation-এর সঙ্গে MathOR thesis করা যায়। Modelling, optimisation, analytics বা simulation-based project-এর ক্ষেত্রে এটি practical হতে পারে।

কিন্তু evaluated thesis confidential company report হতে পারে না। Finnish law অনুযায়ী master’s thesis একটি public document। Commercial secret বা secret information examined thesis-এর বাইরে রাখতে হবে।

Commissioner-এর private background material এবং public academic thesis শুরুতেই আলাদা করে plan করা নিরাপদ।

Thesis presentation বাধ্যতামূলক process element

Current curriculum বলে thesis-এর মধ্যে seminar presentation বা equivalent presentation থাকে। SCI guide আরও স্পষ্টভাবে বলে thesis present করতে হবে এবং presentation detail supervisor-এর সঙ্গে agree করতে হবে।

Final thesis evaluation-এর আগে presentation complete করতে হবে।

Mathematics presentation-এ problem, definitions, proof architecture ও main result বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হতে পারে। Applied/OR thesis-এ model, assumptions, data, computation, validation ও implications বেশি গুরুত্ব পেতে পারে।

Public programme page এক universal slide template দেয় না, তাই supervisor-এর current instruction follow করুন।

Thesis abstract-ই maturity essay

Current SCI guidance অনুযায়ী এই route-এর students-এর thesis abstract maturity essay হিসেবে কাজ করে। তাই abstract শুধু summary নয়, examination requirement-এর অংশ।

School education language Finnish হলে English ও Finnish abstract লাগে। Swedish হলে English ও Swedish। School education language Finnish/Swedish ছাড়া অন্য হলে English abstract যথেষ্ট। Individual language obligations administrative check-এর পরে confirm করা উচিত।

Presentation এবং maturity abstract দুটোই final thesis submission-এর আগে complete থাকতে হবে।

Final PDF/A এবং Aaltodoc

Final thesis evaluation, grading ও archiving-এর জন্য MyStudies-এ submit হয়। Current SCI guidance accepted format হিসেবে PDF/A-1a, -1b, -2a, -2b উল্লেখ করে।

Math-heavy thesis-এ equations, fonts, vector graphics বা LaTeX-generated PDF archival validation issue তৈরি করতে পারে। Deadline-এর আগেই final PDF/A test করা ভালো।

Approved thesis Aaltodoc-এ archive হয়। Approved PDF/A archive-এ পৌঁছানোর পরে normal process-এ file replace করা যায় না, তাই final upload definitive version হিসেবে treat করুন।

Thesis একটি public document

Master’s thesis public document এবং এর contents confidential হতে পারে না। Commissioned thesis হলে commercial secrets background material হিসেবে বাইরে রাখতে হবে।

Current policy অনুযায়ী Aaltodoc metadata ও abstract publish করে। Full text online publish করতে student permission লাগে। Full-text permission না দিলেও thesis confidential হয় না।

Online full-text publishing maximum এক বছর postpone করা যেতে পারে, কিন্তু DPC approval date থেকে thesis public থাকে। Patent-related result থাকলে approval date-এর আগেই patent timing নিয়ে action নেওয়া প্রয়োজন হতে পারে।

Evaluation ও DPC approval

Supervisor SCI evaluation guidelines অনুযায়ী thesis evaluate করেন, official statement লেখেন এবং grade propose করেন। তারপর Degree Programme Committee thesis evaluate ও approve করে।

SCI evaluation guidance independent contribution-এর ওপর জোর দেয়। Higher grade-এর জন্য student-এর own contribution বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

DPC meeting-এর পরে final grade MyStudies-এ আসে এবং thesis completion Sisu-তে register হয়। Evaluation statement MyStudies থেকে পাওয়া যায়।

Specific graduation target থাকলে supervisor-এর final thesis পড়া ও statement লেখার জন্য প্রায় four weeks সময় backward-plan করা উচিত।

Current 2027 SCI thesis-evaluation deadlines

Current SCI guide 2027-এর জন্য final thesis evaluation submission deadlines দিয়েছে:

• 17 February 2027 → DPC 8–11 March
• 21 April 2027 → DPC 17–20 May
• 26 May 2027 → DPC 14–17 June
• 30 July 2027 → DPC 23–26 August
• 22 September 2027 → DPC 11–14 October
• 17 November 2027 → DPC 7–9 December
• 31 December 2027 → processing 2028

MathOR graduation page-এ কিছু additional date asterisk দিয়ে possible graduation date হিসেবে আছে। এগুলো extra thesis-submission deadline নয়। Asterisk date ব্যবহার করতে thesis আগে থেকেই approved ও Sisu-তে registered থাকতে হবে।

Submission-এর আগে MyStudies approvals, presentation, maturity essay এবং attendance condition complete থাকতে হবে। Supervisor-এর সঙ্গে final submission timing আগেই discuss করুন।

Practical MathOR workflow

1. HOPS review করুন। Major compact/long status, minor requirement এবং 120 ECTS structure confirm করুন।
2. Second-year autumn-এ orient করুন, যেখানে possible।
3. Major-related topic define করুন। Minor topic হলে special-case justification রাখুন।
4. Supervisor ও advisor arrangement agree করুন। Role ও feedback expectation শুরুতেই clear করুন।
5. MyStudies approval complete করুন। Supervisor, topic ও advisor(s) formally approve করান।
6. Major-specific research plan বানান। Theoretical, applied ও OR thesis-কে একই method template-এ force করবেন না।
7. Six-month scope protect করুন। Milestone ও research dependency map করুন।
8. Commissioned project হলে confidentiality boundary ঠিক করুন।
9. Independentভাবে work করুন কিন্তু feedback activeভাবে ব্যবহার করুন।
10. Presentation complete করুন। Format supervisor-এর সঙ্গে agree করুন।
11. Abstract/maturity complete করুন। Language requirement check করুন।
12. Final PDF/A validate করুন। Equations/font/graphics archival compatibility check করুন।
13. Supervisor review-এর জন্য প্রায় four weeks রাখুন।
14. MyStudies-এ thesis submit করুন এবং ready হলে Sisu-তে graduation request দিন। Real thesis deadline ব্যবহার করুন, শুধু asterisk graduation date নয়।

Final checklist

Submit করার আগে confirm করুন:

• current 2026–2028 MathOR curriculum follow করছেন;
• Mathematics, Applied Mathematics বা Systems and Operations Research major-এর shared SCI thesis route ব্যবহার করছেন;
• thesis individual 30 ECTS project;
• topic major-related অথবা defensible minor special case;
• BSc registered, attendance active, 120 ECTS HOPS approved;
• supervisor/topic/advisor(s) MyStudies-এ approved;
• six-month full-time workload অনুযায়ী scope realistic;
• methodology actual mathematical question-এর জন্য appropriate;
• supervisor/advisor roles clear;

Core principle: MathOR-এর তিনটি major academically আলাদা, কিন্তু thesis administration একটি shared 30 ECTS School of Science process। Research design major-specific রাখুন, কিন্তু approval, presentation, maturity, submission, evaluation ও archiving-এর SCI workflow একইভাবে follow করুন।
