University of Jyväskylä Music and Science Master's Thesis Guide: MUSS2070, Seminars, Thesis Forms and Vasara

Start with the current Music and Science thesis package

The current University of Jyväskylä Music and Science master’s degree uses a 45 ECTS Research Skills III block: MUSS2011 Master’s Seminar 1, 5 ECTS; MUSS2012 Master’s Seminar 2, 5 ECTS; MUPS1020 Research Method for Master’s Thesis, 5 ECTS; MUSS2070 Master’s thesis, 30 ECTS; and MUSS9000 Maturity Test, 0 ECTS. The first four are graded 0-5; MUSS9000 is Pass/Fail. These are the current programme-specific thesis objects under MUSMP2023 / MUSSYV for the 2024-2028 curriculum period.

1. The current degree is Master of Arts

Music and Science is a 120+ ECTS Master of Arts programme in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, coordinated by the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies. The admissions-facing programme is English-taught, while the Study Guide describes the degree as bilingual, with Finnish and English as official languages of instruction. The identifier MUSMP2023 does not mean the curriculum is a 2023-only regime; the current Study Guide explicitly lists curriculum periods through 2027-2028.

2. The programme is interdisciplinary, but your thesis still needs a bounded problem

The programme spans music psychology, cognition, sociology, music technology, music therapy and related fields. It also highlights themes such as emotion, creativity, embodiment, perception, neuroscience and pedagogical applications. These are legitimate research contexts, not mandatory thesis topics. A good 30 ECTS project selects a clear question or work objective that can be answered with accessible evidence and an appropriate method instead of trying to combine every strand of Music and Science in one thesis.

3. Research Skills III is exactly 45 ECTS

The MUSSYV advanced-studies module places the thesis pathway inside Research Skills III, a 45 ECTS block. Its five objects are MUSS2011, MUSS2012, MUPS1020, MUSS2070 and MUSS9000. Keep that boundary visible when planning Sisu registrations. The separate research-data-management requirement and communication/language thesis-support course are important, but they are not part of the 45 ECTS Research Skills III total.

4. MUSS2011 Master’s Seminar 1 starts the research process

MUSS2011 Master’s Seminar 1, 5 ECTS, grade 0-5, prepares students for independent scientific work and thesis writing. It addresses information retrieval, source criticism, research ethics, argumentation and methodological or epistemological questions. The course includes tasks that help students develop and narrow their topic, including an annotated bibliography and literature review. Current Music and Science guidance says actual course work on the thesis topic begins during Seminar 1 in the first study year.

5. Seminar 1 should produce a defensible topic and literature base

After MUSS2011, students should be able to outline the thesis topic, formulate research questions, find and critically evaluate academic literature and write a literature review showing the state of research around the topic. Use this stage to test feasibility. If the project needs difficult clinical access, expensive laboratory equipment, multilingual participant recruitment or a dataset you do not yet control, resolve those constraints before the topic becomes fixed.

6. MUSS2011 has an attendance requirement for the teaching route

The current teaching-based MUSS2011 completion method requires at least 80% active participation plus successful completion of assigned work. That requirement belongs to the teaching implementation of the seminar; it is not a universal attendance rule for every independent thesis activity. The course is offered in English and Finnish and is timed for the first year of study.

7. MUPS1020 connects method choice to your own thesis

MUPS1020 Research Method for Master’s Thesis, 5 ECTS, grade 0-5, gives an overview of core empirical research approaches and then focuses on the theoretical-methodological approach the student plans to use in the thesis. The course expects students to recognise research approaches, apply a chosen approach in the thesis context and critically evaluate whether the method is reliable and appropriate for the theoretical perspective.

8. There is no universal EEG, experiment or software requirement

Music and Science offers access to modern technologies and specialised courses, but MUPS1020 does not require every thesis to use EEG, motion capture, physiological measures, programming, music-information-retrieval tools or experimental methods. Those approaches are appropriate only where the research question and evidence justify them. Software is an implementation choice, not a methodological rationale. A theoretically strong literature review can be valid even when no new participant data are collected.

9. MUSS2012 Master’s Seminar 2 supports thesis completion

MUSS2012 Master’s Seminar 2, 5 ECTS, grade 0-5, focuses on student presentations, discussion and constructive peer feedback while the thesis is being completed. It develops the ability to discuss research, evaluate one’s own and others’ work from a research-ethics perspective and design the structural components of the thesis. The current course description expects students to submit the thesis for pre-examination at the end of the seminar.

10. Seminar 2 requires the earlier thesis-preparation courses

MUSS2012 lists MUSS2011 and MUPS1020 as compulsory prerequisites. Its teaching-based completion also requires at least 80% active participation, approved assignments and presentation of the student’s research material. This makes the current pathway sequential: topic and literature development in Seminar 1, thesis-specific methodological work, then Seminar 2 as the completion and pre-examination stage.

11. MUSS2070 is the current 30 ECTS master’s thesis

MUSS2070 Master’s thesis, 30 ECTS, grade 0-5, is the controlling thesis object. It requires a defined topic connected to the field, research questions or work objectives, independent information acquisition, critical use of previous research, clear concepts, appropriate evidence or work samples, a justified method or perspective, structured presentation of results, theoretical linkage, critical evaluation, scientific writing, professional reporting, process management and ethical conduct.

12. The thesis can be empirical or theoretical

The admissions-facing JYU programme page explicitly describes the Music and Science thesis as an empirical or theoretical project conducted with the aid of an advisor. Current Faculty guidance also recognises research-oriented reports and literature-review work. Therefore, do not assume that every student must recruit participants or collect new data. The thesis form should follow the research problem, the evidence needed and the learning outcomes.

13. A literature review can be a legitimate thesis form

Current Music and Science thesis guidance recognises literature-review work as a possible form. A literature-review thesis is not an extended annotated bibliography. It still needs a defined purpose or research question, transparent source selection, familiarity with relevant theories and methods, critical evaluation and synthesis of the literature, and a coherent analytical perspective. The literature itself becomes the material that must be selected and handled systematically.

14. MUSS2070 also permits multi-format theses

MUSS2070 explicitly contains provisions for multi-format theses. The learning outcomes allow an appropriate sample of work instead of ordinary research data and allow an appropriate perspective rather than requiring every project to use a conventional empirical method. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also publishes a separate multi-format assessment matrix, confirming that this is a genuine assessed route rather than an informal exception.

15. A multi-format thesis still has to be a scholarly whole

A practical output does not replace theory, previous research, justification or critical reflection. The HYTK multi-format matrix assesses the task setting, scholarly framework, output or work, the relationship between output and context, reflection and evaluation, the thesis text, and potentially process management. Plan the practical and written components together so that the output is clearly connected to the objectives and can be assessed as part of one coherent scholarly project.

16. MUPS1051 Music Technology Project is not the master’s thesis

MUPS1051 Music Technology Project, 5 ECTS, is an optional project course in which students conduct work related to the use or development of music technology. It can develop skills that later support a thesis, but it is not MUSS2070 and does not replace the 30 ECTS thesis. The same boundary applies to internships and working-life projects: they can provide context or material where appropriate, but thesis completion requires the programme’s own thesis object and assessment process.

17. The 1 ECTS research-data-management requirement is separate

The current degree structure requires one 1 ECTS Research Data Management option, such as LIBEDATA, outside Research Skills III. LIBEDATA is Pass/Fail and asks the student to create a Data Management Plan for the thesis. It is recommended alongside thesis planning and before collecting or handling research data. Use it to decide what data are needed, how they will be documented and stored, who can access them, what rights apply, and what will happen after the thesis is completed.

18. XYHH4003 thesis support is also outside Research Skills III

The current Music and Science communication and language studies structure includes XYHH4003 Master’s thesis support, 3 ECTS as a mandatory course for both international and Finnish students. MUSS2012 recommends taking it before or alongside Seminar 2. It supports the thesis-writing process, but it is not one of the five objects in the 45 ECTS Research Skills III block. Keep these degree components separate when describing the formal thesis package.

19. Human-participant and physiological data need privacy planning

Music and Science may involve interviews, recordings, performances, therapy contexts, behavioural experiments, physiological measures or online identifiers. JYU treats information about an identified or identifiable living person as personal data. Voice and combinations of contextual information can identify people even when names are removed. Decide before collection whether personal data are involved and how participant information, storage, access, retention and deletion will be handled.

20. Pseudonymisation does not automatically make data anonymous

Replacing names with codes is often useful, but JYU treats pseudonymised material as personal data when re-identification remains possible. This is particularly relevant for small expert samples, musicians, therapy participants, identifiable performances or rare clinical contexts. Do not promise anonymity simply because a spreadsheet contains participant numbers instead of names. Describe the real identification risk and the safeguards that match it.

21. Ethical review is conditional, while research ethics always applies

JYU’s Human Sciences Ethics Committee follows TENK principles. A thesis involving people does not automatically require committee review. The need depends on the research design and applicable TENK criteria. Ethical responsibility still applies whether or not formal review is required. Projects involving interventions, vulnerable groups, health contexts, intrusive physiological procedures or meaningful risk should be checked early with the supervisor and the relevant ethics guidance. When prior review is required, it must occur before the relevant research or data collection begins.

22. The Data Management Plan should evolve with the study

JYU describes the DMP as a living planning document covering collection, use, storage, reuse and disposal of data, alongside legal and ethical issues, rights, responsibilities, documentation, metadata and security. In a Music and Science thesis, this can include audio or video files, motion data, physiological recordings, survey data, interview transcripts, code, derived datasets or practical outputs. Update the plan when the method, storage location or participant-data flow changes.

23. AI may assist only within JYU’s current study rules

JYU permits AI-based applications in studies in principle, subject to the responsible teacher’s and unit’s instructions. Relevant use must be disclosed transparently. AI output is not a scientific source, and the student remains responsible for claims, interpretation, citations and accuracy. Do not upload personal, confidential or unpublished research data to an unapproved AI service. If AI helps with code, summaries or language, verify the result against the original evidence and applicable course instructions.

24. The maturity-test AI boundary depends on language assessment

JYU restricts AI where linguistic presentation itself is being assessed. MUSS9000 has different routes depending on the student’s earlier language demonstration. When the bachelor-level language requirement has already been demonstrated, the master’s thesis abstract can serve as the maturity test; where the relevant language skill has not been demonstrated, an essay-type expert text may be required. Confirm the actual route before using generative language tools in material connected to maturity assessment.

25. MUSS9000 is the programme-specific maturity object

MUSS9000 Maturity Test, 0 ECTS, Pass/Fail, is offered in English, Finnish and Swedish. It demonstrates familiarity with the thesis subject and academic writing, with language assessment depending on the student’s prior maturity-test history and school-education language. Do not copy another JYU programme’s maturity code or assume that every student follows the same abstract-only route.

26. HYTK assesses ordinary and theoretical theses on a 1-5 matrix

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences matrix effective from 1 August 2024 assesses an ordinary or theoretical thesis as a whole. It covers the research topic, research design and questions, framework, data and methods, analysis, results and reflection, the thesis as a text, and potentially process management and independent work. An accepted thesis must meet the learning outcomes and at least the grade-1 criteria. Stronger grades require clearer justification, deeper critical command, reliable analysis and a more coherent scholarly contribution.

27. Multi-format theses use a distinct HYTK matrix

The separate multi-format matrix evaluates the subject and task setting, framework, output or work, reflection and evaluation, thesis text, and optionally process management. The output must be connected meaningfully to the scholarly context and objectives. This prevents a practical product from being assessed in isolation. Students choosing this route should read the multi-format matrix while designing the project rather than trying to retrofit academic reflection after the practical work has been completed.

28. Pre-examination comes before final assessment

Current Music and Science instructions require pre-examination. The student sends the manuscript to the main supervisor so the supervisor can determine whether the work is moving in an acceptable direction and whether it is ready for final assessment as such or with minor revisions. No grade is suggested at this stage. Turnitin is also used during pre-examination, after which the student can revise the manuscript based on supervisor feedback.

29. Final submission and assessment use Vasara

The final thesis is submitted to Vasara and must include an abstract. Current Music and Science instructions specify two reviewers: the supervisor and a second reviewer. They provide an evaluation statement and proposed grade within approximately one month. Before submission, ensure that the required thesis and maturity-test implementations are registered in Sisu, the applicable Turnitin step is complete and the submitted version is the final version intended for assessment.

30. Students have response and interruption rights

After the reviewers’ statement, the student can submit a rejoinder before grading. Current Music and Science guidance sets a 14-day rejoinder period. The author also has the right to interrupt the assessment process before the final grade is issued under the applicable Degree Regulations. These are formal rights, not ordinary revision opportunities, so use pre-examination for normal improvements and Vasara-stage response mechanisms only when the assessment process genuinely requires them.

31. The thesis is public and moves to JYX after approval

JYU master’s theses are public academic works. The evaluated thesis is automatically sent to the JYX Digital Repository under the current electronic workflow. Confidential background material must therefore be kept outside the submitted public thesis. If a study involves a company, health context, unpublished technology or restricted recordings, design the evidence and reporting plan early so the public scholarly argument remains understandable without disclosing protected material.

32. Accessibility, citation and final file preparation matter

The final online thesis must meet JYU accessibility requirements and should be prepared in the required accessible PDF/A format. Cite sources whenever paraphrasing or quoting and use the selected citation style consistently. The current Music and Science sources do not establish one universal named citation style such as APA for every thesis, nor do they establish one universal word count or page count. Follow the current department, Faculty and supervisor instructions rather than copying limits from an older thesis.

33. Do not use the stray BENS or CMBS codes on the central guidance page

The current central JYU master’s-thesis page contains unrelated BENS/CMBS course-code material close to the Music and Science section because the page combines instructions for many programmes. Those codes do not override the current MUSMP2023 Study Guide. The controlling Music and Science package is MUSS2011, MUSS2012, MUPS1020, MUSS2070 and MUSS9000. When a broad university page and the programme’s current Study Guide appear to conflict, verify the programme-specific course objects before acting.

34. Final Music and Science checklist

Confirm that your Sisu plan reflects the current MUSMP2023 / MUSSYV route and the exact Research Skills III package. Use Seminar 1 to narrow the topic and literature base, MUPS1020 to justify the method, and Seminar 2 to bring the thesis toward pre-examination. Decide whether the thesis is empirical, theoretical, literature-review based or multi-format according to the actual task. Complete RDM planning, ethics and privacy checks before collecting data, document any AI use, use the correct MUSS9000 maturity route, complete pre-examination and Turnitin, prepare the accessible final file, submit through Vasara, respond to the assessment if necessary, and plan for public JYX archiving.

35. Treat specialist technologies as research options, not programme-wide obligations

Music and Science exposes students to technologies such as EEG, motion capture, digital audio, sensor systems and computational tools through programme research environments and optional specialist courses. Those resources can enable strong projects when they genuinely answer the question, but they also create design costs: equipment access, calibration, technical competence, participant burden, preprocessing and data-management complexity. Decide first what evidence is required. A study of music perception may use behavioural responses without EEG; an embodiment project may use qualitative observation without motion capture; a music-technology thesis may be theoretical rather than a programming project. The defensible choice is the least complicated design that can answer the research question rigorously, not the most technically impressive setup available.

36. Build the two-year thesis timeline around the seminar sequence

Current programme guidance gives a natural sequence. During the first year, use advanced coursework to explore possible topics, then use MUSS2011 to narrow the topic, build the literature base and formulate research questions. Take MUPS1020 when the theoretical-methodological approach can be tied to the emerging thesis, and complete the applicable RDM work before substantive data handling. In the second year, MUSS2012 becomes the completion environment: present the developing research, use peer and supervisor feedback, resolve ethics and reporting issues and move the manuscript toward pre-examination. Leave time after pre-examination for revisions, Turnitin, accessible PDF/A preparation, maturity-test requirements and Vasara assessment. This sequencing is more reliable than treating the thesis as a writing task that starts only after data collection is finished.
