Start with the current Game Studies thesis package

The University of Jyväskylä Game Studies master’s programme now has a current 2026–2028 Study Guide structure. For thesis planning, the central package is straightforward: GAMS1301 Game Research Methods 5 ECTS, GAMS1302 Advanced Game Research Methods 5 ECTS, GAMS1303 Thesis Seminar 5 ECTS, GAMS1401 Master’s Thesis 30 ECTS, and GAMS1402 Maturity Test 0 ECTS. These courses sit inside the 45 ECTS Methodology and Research block of Advanced Studies in Game Studies.

This matters because older or adjacent game-research courses at JYU are not substitutes for the current programme objects. The thesis itself is GAMS1401. GAMS1202 Game Project and GAMS1203 Game Research Project are separate project options. Treat course codes as part of the formal workflow, not as interchangeable labels.

Degree title: use Master of Arts, not the conflicting English metadata field

The awarded qualification should be described as Master of Arts. JYU’s Finnish Study Guide gives the degree title Filosofian maisteri, and the University’s admissions-facing Game Studies page explicitly states that the degree awarded is Master of Arts. The English GAMMP2026 Study Guide currently displays “Master of Science” in one degree-title metadata field, but that conflicts with the Finnish Study Guide and the qualification information published for applicants.

For a thesis guide, CV, application or institutional description, do not repeat the conflicting English metadata as if it were settled. Use Master of Arts and, if necessary, note that an inconsistent English Study Guide field exists. The curriculum facts themselves remain usable because the programme, module and GAMS course objects are current and internally coherent.

Programme and faculty context

Game Studies is a 120 ECTS, two-year, English-language master’s programme in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The coordinating unit is the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies. GAMMP2026 is the current degree-programme object, and GAMADV is the Advanced Studies in Game Studies module.

The public programme page still contains older wording saying that the curriculum will be published soon. That sentence has been overtaken by the live Study Guide. When the marketing page and Study Guide disagree about whether curriculum details exist, use the live Study Guide for current course and thesis requirements.

The 45 ECTS methodology and research block

The compulsory research sequence totals 45 ECTS. GAMS1301 and GAMS1302 develop methodological competence, GAMS1303 carries the thesis seminar process, GAMS1401 is the 30 ECTS thesis, and GAMS1402 completes the maturity requirement. This is a useful planning structure because it separates method preparation, seminar development, the thesis itself and the maturity record.

Do not add optional courses to this block as if they were compulsory. XENB0007 Master’s Thesis Support may be available as language and communication support, and GAMS1506 Quantitative Research Methods is an optional specialisation course. Neither becomes a universal thesis requirement merely because it can support some students.

GAMS1301: build a defensible research strategy

GAMS1301 Game Research Methods is a 5 ECTS advanced course graded 0–5. It focuses on the research process, methodological perspectives, scientific principles and ethics. Students are expected to understand connections between methods and underlying paradigms, evaluate ways of gathering and analysing data, plan a research strategy, and justify methodological choices.

Use this course to move beyond a topic idea. A thesis proposal needs a research problem, a defensible source of evidence and a method that can actually answer the question. The curriculum does not say that every Game Studies thesis must use interviews, surveys, experiments or quantitative analysis. Method choice should follow the research problem.

GAMS1302: specialise without making one method universal

GAMS1302 Advanced Game Research Methods is another 5 ECTS course graded 0–5. It moves from general research design to deeper competence in one or two specific methods, their data-gathering processes, their suitability for particular research problems and materials, and questions of reliability, validity and ethics. The course also emphasises newer digital-humanities infrastructures, methods and analysis tools.

This supports sophisticated digital game research, but it does not create a compulsory software stack. A streaming-data project, textual game analysis, ethnographic study, player-community study or quantitative project may need very different tools. Your thesis should explain why the selected technique fits the material and question.

GAMS1303 Thesis Seminar: the working thesis process

GAMS1303 Thesis Seminar is 5 ECTS, graded 0–5 and taught in English. It is not simply a presentation course. Students draft a research plan on a topic agreed with the supervisor, work on the MA thesis according to that plan, present the project at different stages, and give feedback on other students’ work. The seminar also develops scientific writing, theoretical and critical thinking, argumentation, information searching and the ability to use feedback.

Treat the seminar as a project-control environment. Bring decisions to it early: scope, research question, data or work sample, theoretical framework, method, ethics and schedule. Feedback is most useful before the thesis has hardened into a nearly final form.

GAMS1401 Master’s Thesis: 30 ECTS and graded 0–5

The formal thesis is GAMS1401 Master’s Thesis, 30 ECTS, advanced studies, graded on the 0–5 scale and completed in English. The 2026–2027 implementation runs as a 30 ECTS independent master’s-thesis study. The course learning outcomes are unusually useful because they show what the finished work must demonstrate: a relevant research topic, clear questions or work objectives, independent information retrieval, critical use of previous research, clear concepts, appropriate material, justified method or perspective, structured results, scientific argumentation and control of the working process.

The evaluation is not limited to the final document. The completion method explicitly refers to the master’s thesis and the working process.

Traditional written thesis and portfolio thesis are both possible

JYU’s Game Studies information states that the 30 ECTS thesis may be a traditional written thesis or a portfolio thesis combining a practical part with a reflective essay. GAMS1401 supports this by distinguishing conventional data and research methods from, where appropriate, a sample of work and a research perspective for multi-format theses.

This creates flexibility, not a shortcut. A portfolio thesis still has to demonstrate the programme’s research learning outcomes and meet faculty assessment standards. The practical component does not replace critical engagement with research, conceptual framing, justification, reflection, ethics or academic reporting.

Do not confuse the thesis with GAMS1202 or GAMS1203

GAMS1202 Game Project and GAMS1203 Game Research Project belong to the internship/project part of the curriculum. GAMS1203 is a 10 ECTS research project where students apply game-studies methods in a real project. That experience may help develop a later thesis idea, but it is not GAMS1401 and it does not replace the 30 ECTS master’s thesis.

Keep this distinction clear in study planning and in any description of completed work. A project deliverable can inform a thesis, but the thesis has its own code, scope, learning outcomes, assessment and formal submission process.

There is no universal method, software, word count or page count

The current Game Studies curriculum teaches broad methodological competence and then deeper work with selected methods. It does not prescribe a single design for all theses. GAMS1506 Quantitative Research Methods is optional, so a quantitative design is not automatically required. The registered current sources also do not impose one mandatory software package, one universal thesis word count or one universal page count.

Avoid importing generic online advice as if it were a programme rule. Instead, agree the practical scale of the thesis with the supervisor and seminar, while ensuring that the work satisfies GAMS1401 learning outcomes and HYTK assessment criteria.

How the HYTK assessment matrix reads your thesis

Game Studies is in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the current HYTK master’s-thesis evaluation matrix has applied since 1 August 2024. The thesis is assessed as a whole. The matrix covers the research topic, research design and questions, research framework, data and methods, analysis, presentation of results and reflection, the thesis as a text, and process management/independent work. The last area is assessed by the supervisor.

Accepted work must meet at least the thesis learning outcomes and grade-1 criteria. Grades 2 and 4 sit between the anchor descriptions for 1, 3 and 5. The matrix also requires good scientific practice and research ethics across the process.

What stronger grades require

A stronger thesis does more than contain the required sections. The HYTK matrix rewards a well-justified and well-delimited topic, coherent and interesting research questions, a strong theoretical or conceptual framework, methods that fit the research objectives, justified data choices, reliable analysis, clear connection between findings and earlier research, reflective discussion of reliability, and convincing scientific writing.

For Game Studies, this means the object of study cannot carry the thesis by itself. A popular game, esports community, streaming platform or design artefact becomes academically valuable only when the research question, theoretical framing, evidence and analysis create a defensible scholarly contribution.

Plan the evidence before collecting it

Game Studies can involve many evidence types: game texts and mechanics, player behaviour, interviews, community discussions, platform traces, streaming data, design documents, archival material, surveys, experiments or a practical artefact. The curriculum deliberately leaves room for different approaches. The key is to decide what evidence is needed to answer the research question before collecting large amounts of material.

Define inclusion and exclusion rules, sampling or case-selection logic, what counts as a unit of analysis, and how the material will be stored and documented. If the design changes, update the plan and explain the change.

Personal data matters in game and platform research

Game research often uses apparently public digital traces, but public availability does not automatically mean that the material is non-personal. JYU defines personal data broadly and notes that voice, images, email addresses, IP addresses and characteristic opinions may identify a living person. Pseudonymised data can still be personal data when re-identification remains possible.

This is especially relevant to Discord communities, player forums, livestreams, esports teams, user-generated content and interviews. Decide early whether personal data are involved and plan lawful, proportionate processing before collection.

Ethical review is conditional, but ethics is not optional

JYU’s Human Sciences Ethics Committee follows TENK principles. Human participation does not automatically mean that every thesis requires prior committee review. When a TENK criterion requiring ethical review is met, the committee must be asked for review. The supervisor should help identify the applicable requirements, but the thesis author remains responsible for the ethics of the research.

Even when prior review is not required, ethical principles still apply. Consider informed participation, potential harm, privacy, vulnerable groups, power relations, the visibility of online identities, and whether quoting or reproducing game-community material can expose individuals.

Make a data management plan early

JYU requires a Data Management Plan for research projects carried out at the University. A DMP covers the data lifecycle from collection or creation through processing, storage, documentation, publication, archiving or destruction. It also addresses legal and ethical issues, rights to data, metadata, integrity, roles and resources.

Treat the DMP as a living document. Game-research data can change quickly when APIs, platforms or communities change. Update the plan if the actual material, storage location, access permissions, retention period or sharing strategy changes.

GAMS1402 Maturity Test: usually the thesis abstract

GAMS1402 Maturity Test carries 0 ECTS and is graded Pass/Fail. For the default route, the abstract included at the beginning of the master’s thesis acts as the maturity examination, and no separate language evaluation is needed. When the thesis grade is registered, the maturity PASS is normally registered with the same date.

There is an important exception. A Finnish student who has not completed the required previous maturity examination must take an actual maturity exam in which Finnish language is evaluated separately. Follow the GAMS1402 implementation that applies to your own language-history situation rather than copying another student’s route.

University regulations and the programme-specific maturity route

JYU Degree Regulations use the formal category “maturity essay” and require a maturity completion for both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Programme-specific GAMS1402 instructions explain how that requirement is operationalised for current Game Studies students. Read the two sources hierarchically rather than treating them as contradictory: the regulation creates the requirement, while GAMS1402 provides the current completion method.

Do not replace GAMS1402 with a maturity code from another programme or faculty.

Supervisor and examiner rules

Under JYU Degree Regulations, the supervisor-in-charge of a master’s thesis must hold a doctoral degree and have an employment relationship with JYU. For examination, the dean nominates two examiners. At least one examiner must hold a doctoral degree, and the second examiner may be the thesis supervisor. Examiners may submit a joint statement or separate statements with a proposed grade.

The student has a right to respond to the examiner statements before the final grade. The student may also interrupt the assessment process once before the final decision. If the thesis is later resubmitted after interruption, it must have been rewritten at least partly, as evaluated by the supervisor.

Pair thesis is possible, but individual contribution must be assessable

JYU permits a master’s thesis to have one author or two authors working as a pair. A thesis may also be part of a larger research project. For joint work, each student’s contribution must be identifiable so that it can be assessed independently.

If you plan a pair or project-based Game Studies thesis, agree authorship, responsibilities, data access, analysis tasks, practical production work and writing ownership early. The collaborative setting does not remove the requirement for independent assessment.

Prepare for Vasara before you submit

All JYU faculties use the Vasara system for electronic master’s-thesis submission, evaluation and archiving. Before starting submission, make sure the thesis is the final version, discuss readiness with the supervisor, complete the Turnitin check according to supervisor instructions, and ensure that you are registered in Sisu for both GAMS1401 and the maturity-test implementation. The submitted file should be an accessible PDF/A.

Do not treat Vasara as a draft-upload space. JYU states that after submission no further changes can be made to the work before it is assessed and archived.

Confidential background material must stay out of the public thesis

Master’s theses are public documents at JYU and are stored in JYX. If a company, game studio, community partner or other collaborator gives confidential background information, that material must be separated from the thesis submitted for evaluation and publication. A private commissioning agreement cannot turn the assessed thesis itself into a confidential document.

Plan this before writing. Use non-confidential descriptions, aggregated results or separate protected background materials where appropriate, and confirm the boundary with the supervisor and partner.

What happens after submission

The Vasara process includes examiner evaluation, the student’s opportunity to accept, respond or request interruption, the formal grade decision and transfer of approved thesis information to Sisu and JYX. JYU notes that the return-and-review process can take up to approximately two months. The formal completion date of the thesis is the date when the evaluation decision is made.

Plan graduation backwards from this process. Do not assume that uploading the PDF means the thesis is immediately complete in the study register.

AI can assist, but it cannot become your evidence

JYU allows AI-based applications in studies in principle, while the responsible teacher or unit may give more specific instructions. AI can support ideation, structuring, understanding concepts or language work, but AI is not a scientific source. Students remain responsible for submitted content and should verify scholarly claims from original sources.

If generative AI is used in a thesis, JYU requires disclosure of which application was used and how it was used. Do not present generated statements as evidence, and do not allow AI to replace the analytical work that the thesis is assessing.

AI and language assessment need extra caution

JYU states that AI cannot be used in assignments where linguistic presentation itself is part of the assessment criteria. This matters especially if your maturity route includes separate language assessment. The default GAMS1402 abstract route normally does not require separate language evaluation, but students in the Finnish-language exception have a different assessed-language situation.

When in doubt, follow the current GAMS1402 implementation and teacher instructions rather than assuming that disclosure makes every AI use acceptable.

Citation: consistency is required, one named style is not universal

JYU requires you to identify sources when paraphrasing another person’s ideas and when making a direct quotation. It also requires consistent use of one citation style. For the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies, the current citation page directs students to the general guidance rather than imposing one named style for all theses.

Therefore, do not invent a universal APA requirement for Game Studies. Confirm the style expected by the supervisor, seminar or current departmental materials and then apply it consistently.

Accessibility is part of final thesis preparation

JYU requires public online theses to meet accessibility requirements. The University’s guidance explains the use of document styles so headings, lists and structure can be interpreted by assistive technologies, and recommends a minimum 12-point font for accessible Word documents. The submission guidance also requires an accessible PDF/A.

Accessibility is easiest when built into the document from the beginning. Use real heading styles, meaningful link text, readable tables, alt text where needed and a logical reading order rather than trying to repair everything after the thesis is finished.

JYX publication and post-approval corrections

Through Vasara, the approved thesis is automatically stored in JYX. Once an approved thesis has been stored there, JYU says it cannot simply be replaced with a new version. If errors are discovered after approval, corrections are handled through an errata sheet approved by the thesis supervisor.

That is another reason to treat the Vasara upload as final. Check title, abstract, metadata, references, figures, appendices, accessibility and any confidential-material boundary before submission.

A practical timeline for the Game Studies thesis

A sensible sequence is to use GAMS1301 to shape the research strategy, GAMS1302 to deepen the method, and GAMS1303 to convert the idea into a supervised research plan and iterative thesis project. Build the DMP and ethics/privacy decisions before data collection. Draft the thesis or portfolio components while using seminar feedback, then complete supervisor review and Turnitin before final Vasara submission.

Register both GAMS1401 and GAMS1402 correctly in Sisu, prepare the accessible PDF/A, submit only the final public version, and allow time for examiner evaluation and the formal decision. This sequence is not a substitute for your personal study plan, but it reflects the current official workflow.

Final checklist before submission

Before you submit, verify the essentials: your degree context is Master of Arts; the formal thesis is GAMS1401 30 ECTS; the seminar is GAMS1303 5 ECTS; the maturity course is GAMS1402 0 ECTS Pass/Fail; your chosen thesis form matches the learning outcomes; the method is justified rather than assumed; personal-data and ethics obligations are handled; the DMP reflects the actual data; sources are cited consistently; AI use is disclosed where applicable; confidential material is outside the public thesis; Turnitin is complete; Sisu registrations are correct; and the PDF/A is accessible.

The most common preventable error is importing a rule from another programme because it looks familiar. Use the current Game Studies objects and current JYU/HYTK rules for the specific layer they govern.
