Quick answer: what is the UEF Accounting and Finance thesis route?

The current University of Eastern Finland Accounting and Finance programme is a two-year, 120 ECTS Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) taught in English on the Kuopio campus. For the 2026-2027 curriculum, the controlling Peppi programme is MDPAFI26, programme object 139611. The thesis is YK00EJ70 Master’s thesis, Accounting and Finance, 30 ECTS, graded 0-5. It is separate from 5214302 Master’s Thesis Seminar in Accounting and Finance, 5 ECTS, Pass/Fail, and YK00EJ61 Maturity Test, Master’s Degree in Business, 0 ECTS, Pass/Fail. The maturity test is completed through the thesis summary or abstract. A separate 15 ECTS methodological-studies module includes the compulsory 5 ECTS YK00DO48 Research Methodologies in Business Studies.

1. Use MDPAFI26 and the live Peppi records as the controlling curriculum

Start thesis planning from the current programme and course objects, not from an old thesis PDF, another Business School programme or a general Finnish thesis template. Peppi identifies the current programme as MDPAFI26 for 2026-2027. Inside it, the advanced-studies module is 70 ECTS and its compulsory block contains the thesis, maturity test, thesis seminar and Current Research in Accounting and Finance. The methodology module is separate. This matters because it prevents a common arithmetic error: the 5 ECTS seminar and 5 ECTS methods course do not enlarge the thesis to 35 or 40 ECTS. Your thesis itself remains 30 ECTS.

2. YK00EJ70 is a research thesis, not only a final business report

The thesis course requires independent analysis, interpretation and production of research-based knowledge, application of that knowledge to business problems, evaluation of research methods used in accounting and finance, and justification of the methods used in your own study. Peppi allocates 810 hours of individual work. A company case, valuation exercise, dashboard or consulting problem can provide an excellent setting, but the final work still needs a defensible research question, a position in previous research, a transparent method, analysis and conclusions that stay within the evidence. A polished managerial recommendation cannot substitute for the academic research outcomes of YK00EJ70.

3. The thesis language is English for this international Business School programme

The programme itself is English-medium, YK00EJ70 is recorded in English, and the current Faculty/Business School study guide states that the minimum advanced studies in the Business School’s international master’s programmes, including the pro gradu thesis, are completed in English. Do not transfer a Finnish-language rule from a Finnish degree route into AFI. If you are considering an exceptional language arrangement, obtain the current unit decision before writing because a general right to use another language should not be assumed from another programme.

4. The 5 ECTS seminar is separate, and the current AFI realization is in English

The thesis seminar is course 5214302, 5 ECTS, Pass/Fail. Its learning outcomes include planning and implementing a research project, working as part of a research group and presenting stages of the project. The generic course record can look confusing because it also serves Finnish-degree students. The current realization layer resolves this: Peppi lists a Finnish-degree realization and a distinct 5214302-3008 Master’s Thesis Seminar in Accounting and Finance (AFI / English), with English as the language of instruction. For 2026-2027 this AFI realization is classified as distance teaching. Treat realization schedules and teachers as cycle-sensitive and recheck them in your own study year.

5. The maturity test is the thesis summary or abstract

The exact object is YK00EJ61 Maturity Test, Master’s Degree in Business, 0 ECTS, Pass/Fail. Its course description says that the summary attached to the master’s thesis serves as the maturity test and demonstrates familiarity with the thesis field. It is assessed for content, structure and formal academic writing style, and both content and language must satisfy the requirement. This makes the abstract more than metadata. Write it as a concise independent academic text that accurately states the problem, approach, central evidence and conclusion without introducing claims that the thesis itself cannot support.

6. AI must not be used on the maturity-test abstract

UEF’s current AI policy permits appropriately disclosed AI support in parts of thesis work, but it contains an important absolute boundary: AI cannot be used in the maturity test. UEF’s separate thesis-AI guidance is even more explicit that AI must not be used at all in the abstract, including checking or translating it. For AFI these rules connect directly because the thesis summary is the maturity test. Therefore, do not generate, rewrite, translate or AI-proofread the AFI maturity-test abstract. Write and check that section yourself under the current university and seminar instructions.

7. YK00DO48 provides the compulsory methods foundation

The current programme has a 15 ECTS Methodological studies module. Its compulsory component is YK00DO48 Research Methodologies in Business Studies, 5 ECTS, taught in English and graded 0-5. The course covers research problems and designs, theory testing and theory building, research plans, quantitative approaches such as surveys, secondary or online data and experiments, qualitative approaches such as interviews, observation and secondary data, research ethics, validity, reliability, trustworthiness and the use of AI in academic research. The remaining 10 ECTS of the methodology module comes from other methodological studies under the programme structure.

8. Methods training gives options, not one compulsory thesis design

Because YK00DO48 covers quantitative and qualitative research, students sometimes assume that an AFI thesis must be mixed methods. The verified curriculum does not establish that rule. A strong thesis can be quantitative, qualitative, mixed, conceptual or use carefully justified secondary evidence depending on the research question and supervisor-approved design. Likewise, the official sources do not impose SPSS, Stata, R, Python, MATLAB or another named software package on every AFI thesis. Select tools because they fit the design and data, then document enough of the workflow for the analysis to be understood and, where appropriate, reproduced.

9. Turn a broad accounting or finance interest into a researchable question

Topics such as sustainability reporting, AI in finance, corporate valuation, audit quality, financial performance or risk management are too broad by themselves. Narrow the phenomenon, population, setting, period and relationship you actually want to study. For example, separate a descriptive question about reporting practice from an explanatory question about why reporting differs, and separate a prediction question from a causal question about whether a practice changes an outcome. The programme’s emphasis on analytical thinking is better served by one answerable question than by a large topic with many disconnected variables.

10. Build a theory-to-evidence map before collecting data

For each central concept, write what it means in your study, what mechanism you expect, what evidence would support the mechanism and what alternative explanation could produce the same observation. If agency theory, signalling, institutional theory, information asymmetry, behavioural finance or another framework is used, connect it to observable variables or qualitative evidence. A literature review becomes stronger when it explains why specific evidence is needed rather than only summarising authors. This map also helps prevent a common Discussion problem where theoretical language becomes more ambitious than the measurements actually used.

11. Treat secondary financial and accounting data as data with provenance

Company accounts, databases, market records, analyst information, ESG data and internal finance extracts all have collection rules. Record the source, coverage period, accounting definitions, units, currencies, corporate actions, missingness and any changes in data construction. If you merge databases, document identifiers and match rules. An internal KPI may change definition across years, and a vendor database may restate historical observations. Large sample size does not remove provenance problems. Your Methods section should make the analytical sample traceable from the original source to the final table used in analysis.

12. Financial modelling and forecasting need a validation design

The programme explicitly highlights financial modelling, data analysis and forecasting, but using an advanced model does not automatically produce a strong thesis. Define the target variable, prediction horizon, information available at the prediction date and comparison benchmark. Avoid leakage from future information into training data. For time-ordered data, respect chronology when splitting training and evaluation periods. Report performance with metrics suited to the problem and compare the model with a reasonable baseline. A model that predicts well does not automatically identify a causal mechanism, so keep forecasting and causal interpretation separate.

13. Quantitative analysis starts with the estimand and denominator

Before running regressions, state what quantity you are trying to estimate: a mean difference, association, elasticity, risk relationship, prediction or causal effect. Define the unit of observation and why observations can be treated as independent or how dependence is addressed. Explain exclusions, missing values and transformations. If repeated observations come from the same firm, fund or individual, the data structure matters for uncertainty. Statistical significance should not replace effect size, economic relevance, model diagnostics or design limitations. The conclusion should describe exactly what the analysis can identify.

14. Survey research needs sampling and measurement discipline

If you use a survey for investor behaviour, management accounting, audit perceptions or another topic, define the target population before recruitment. Record how participants were reached, how many were invited, response count and important exclusions. For multi-item constructs, identify the scale source, item wording, response options, translation or adaptation, scoring and missing-data handling. A convenience online sample can still answer a bounded exploratory question, but it should not be presented as representative of a population without a sampling basis.

15. Interview studies need role-based sampling and an audit trail

For qualitative work, identify which roles possess evidence relevant to the question. A finance manager, controller, auditor, analyst, investor and operational manager may see the same process differently. Explain inclusion criteria and recruitment, not just the final number of interviews. Record how audio or notes became transcripts, codes, categories and themes, and keep analytic memos for important interpretation decisions. An interview gives a participant’s account; it does not automatically prove that an organisation-level effect occurred. Triangulate important factual or process claims where suitable.

16. Validity, reliability and trustworthiness should be designed in, not added at the end

The methods course explicitly teaches validity and reliability for quantitative work and trustworthiness for qualitative work. Use these concepts during design. For quantitative studies, think about construct measurement, model specification, sample selection, data quality and robustness. For qualitative studies, think about credibility, transparent coding, triangulation where useful, reflexivity and the boundaries of transferability. A limitations section is not a place to apologise for every constraint. It should explain which inferences remain defensible and which stronger claims the design cannot make.

17. Keep association, prediction and causality separate

Accounting and finance datasets often make causal language tempting. A coefficient, correlation or before/after difference can show association without identifying what would have happened in the absence of the exposure. A forecasting model can predict well without explaining why an outcome occurs. If the thesis makes a causal claim, explain the counterfactual logic and how the design addresses confounding, selection and timing. If that identification is not available, a precise associative or predictive conclusion is academically stronger than an unsupported causal claim.

18. Research ethics applies even when central committee review does not

UEF follows good scientific practice, but its Research Ethics Committee states that it does not review individual master’s theses as a rule. A master’s thesis can be reviewed when it forms part of a broader research project applying for ethical review. Do not turn this into either extreme: neither “all interview theses require committee approval” nor “master’s theses have no ethics requirements” is correct. Discuss participant information, consent, power relationships, risks, personal data and any project-level review with your supervisor before relevant data collection begins.

19. Plan research data management before collection

UEF provides research-data-management material specifically for students in the master’s phase. Decide what data will be created or received, where it can be stored, who may access it, how it will be backed up, how identifiers will be separated, and what will be retained or deleted after the thesis. Personal data requires appropriate protection, and small company or expert samples may allow indirect identification even after names are removed. If data originate from a research group or company, clarify ownership, permitted uses and whether you have authority to archive or share them.

20. Company collaboration must preserve academic independence and thesis publicity

A company can provide a valuable research problem, dataset or access to respondents, but the assessed thesis remains an academic work. UEF treats advanced-studies theses as public and recommends Open Access publication. Design the project so trade secrets, unreleased financial information and identifiable customer or employee data do not have to appear in the assessed public manuscript. A sponsor may identify factual mistakes or sensitive material, but it should not control the academic conclusion. If a separate confidential business deliverable is needed, keep its status distinct from the university thesis and confirm the arrangement with the supervisor.

21. Do not invent a citation style for AFI

The verified current public AFI sources do not establish one mandatory named style such as APA 7 for every Accounting and Finance thesis. UEF Library provides referencing and reference-management support, but library examples do not become a programme mandate automatically. Follow the current Business School, seminar, study-community or supervisor instruction that applies to your cohort. Whichever style is required, apply it consistently and ensure that every source can be traced. This is especially important for datasets, standards, company reports, working papers and web-based financial information where bibliographic details can be irregular.

22. AI use elsewhere in the thesis must be transparent and responsible

Outside the prohibited abstract/maturity-test section, UEF may allow AI support when current instructions permit it. The student remains responsible for accuracy and scholarly quality. Report the application and how it was used, and keep enough notes to explain material use. Do not rely on generated references without checking the original source. Do not upload confidential company material or personal data to an external AI service without an appropriate approved basis. If course or supervisor instructions are stricter than the general university policy, the lower-level instruction controls your work.

23. Complete the Turnitin step before official submission

UEF’s current submission workflow requires the thesis to be submitted to Turnitin in eLearn Moodle before official submission. The supervisor or principal supervisor reviews the originality report and gives permission to proceed. YK00EJ70 also states that originality is checked after opposition and before evaluation, with an opportunity to make corrections after opposition. Treat this as part of the scholarly quality-control process, not as a last-minute similarity percentage. Resolve quotation, paraphrasing, source and authorship issues while there is still time to correct the manuscript.

24. Official submission uses one PDF/A file in UEFe-Services

After supervisor permission, convert the thesis to PDF/A and follow UEF’s required filename and file-preparation instructions. Submit the thesis and its appendices as one PDF/A through UEFe-Services. Complete the metadata carefully because the unit, supervisor information, other supervisors, exact title, originality-report information and public-access selection enter the formal workflow. You should be registered as present both when submitting and when the grade is awarded. The thesis completion date is the date of the grading decision, not the day you upload the manuscript.

25. Know the two-examiner and student-response process

After submission, the supervisor proposes reviewers and the decision-maker, and the head of department or unit approves the reviewers. UEF’s Education Regulations require two examiners; as a rule, one should be the supervisor. The examiners provide a written statement and proposed grade within one month of appointment, subject to the university’s excluded periods. Before the final assessment, you can respond to the statement. Read the statement as part of the formal process rather than assuming that the proposed grade is already the final decision.

26. You have one formal suspension and revision route

The current workflow allows the student to request that the review process be suspended once. After suspension, the thesis is revised based on supervisor comments and resubmitted for review. If examiner grade proposals differ, or if you do not accept the proposal, the head of department or unit may appoint a third reviewer. This is different from ordinary supervisor feedback before submission. Plan enough time for formal examination and possible revision if graduation timing matters, especially because assessment deadlines exclude designated non-teaching periods and 15 June to 15 August.

27. The thesis is graded 0-5, but use the Business School’s current detailed rubric

YK00EJ70 and the Education Regulations establish the 0-5 scale. The Faculty’s current guide publishes general indicative dimensions but explicitly says that department or discipline criteria take priority, and it states that the Business School has its own pro gradu criteria. The Faculty Council formally approved separate Business School indicative criteria on 26 August 2024. The detailed current grade-by-grade attachment is not exposed in the retrievable public source set used for this guide, so this guide does not substitute the faculty-generic descriptors or an old rubric. Obtain the current Business School/seminar/supervisor rubric and use it as the detailed assessment reference.

28. Publication and Open Access come after grading

After grading, the administrator records the thesis in Peppi. The library then processes it according to the public-access level selected during submission. UEF recommends Open Access. If Open Access is selected, the thesis is made available online for browsing, copying and printing. The access level can later be changed by written request to the library. Plan publication early if the thesis uses company or participant material, because late deletion of sensitive details can damage the coherence of the study.

29. Work backwards from the degree timeline

For semester-end planning, current UEF guidance advises submitting a master’s thesis for review by 30 April for spring and 31 October for autumn, with degree-certificate applications by 31 May and 30 November respectively. These are planning dates, not a replacement for your programme’s actual seminar or supervisor deadlines. Build backwards through research-question approval, literature work, methods planning, ethics/data decisions, access and recruitment, analysis, seminar presentations, full-draft feedback, abstract written without AI, Turnitin, PDF/A preparation, UEFe-Services submission, examination and possible revision.

30. Run a final inference audit before freezing the manuscript

Take each strong sentence in Results and Discussion and label it descriptive, associative, predictive, interpretive, comparative, causal or normative. Then ask whether the design really supports that label. Check denominators, exclusions and variable definitions in quantitative work; participant coverage, coding and contradictory evidence in qualitative work; data provenance in secondary-data studies; validation in forecasting; and identification in causal claims. Narrow any sentence that is stronger than the evidence. This final control often improves a thesis more than adding another model or another page of literature.

31. Final Accounting and Finance checklist

Before submission, verify your current MDPAFI26 study plan; YK00EJ70 30 ECTS; 5214302 seminar 5 ECTS and the current AFI/English realization; YK00EJ61 maturity-test status; YK00DO48 and the rest of your methodology module; the current Business School detailed rubric and citation instruction; a bounded research question; theory-to-evidence alignment; justified method; reproducible data handling; validity, reliability or trustworthiness; ethics and personal-data controls; company/publicity boundaries; transparent permitted AI use with absolutely no AI in the abstract; Turnitin clearance; PDF/A and UEFe-Services submission; examiner-response timing; and the graduation calendar. The strongest AFI thesis is not the one with the most techniques. It is the one where question, evidence, method and conclusion fit each other precisely.
