Quick answer: what is the Åbo Akademi University Advanced Practice Nursing thesis route?

The current Master’s Degree Programme in Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) at Åbo Akademi University is a 120 ECTS, two-year Master of Health Sciences programme taught in English and based in Vaasa. The current Study Guide object is FPV2025APN / programme 34407 for students starting in 2025 and 2026. A separate VV00CM91 Thesis seminar, 10 ECTS accompanies the thesis. Do not describe the thesis itself as 40 ECTS.

1. Start from the current 120 ECTS APN programme, not a generic health-sciences template

The current programme leads to the Master of Health Sciences and is designed for two years of full-time study. Its profile is advanced clinical nursing, Caring Science and evidence-based healthcare development. The programme develops advanced clinical assessment, decision-making, consultation, collaboration, research and development, leadership and other APN competencies. A thesis must still be built from the actual research question, available evidence, supervision, data and applicable ethical or organisational permissions.

2. Understand the degree structure before calculating thesis credits

The current Study Guide divides the 120 ECTS degree into 25 ECTS Advanced Studies in Health Care Science, 40 ECTS Scientific Specialisation, 40 ECTS Other Studies and 15 ECTS Elective Studies. The Scientific Specialisation is the important block for thesis planning because it contains the 30 ECTS thesis, the separate 10 ECTS Thesis seminar and the 0 ECTS language-response object. Credits should therefore be read at the correct level rather than added twice.

3. The exact thesis is three 10 ECTS parts

The APN thesis is not represented by one 30 ECTS course code. The current curriculum splits it into VV00CM92, VV00CM93 and VV00CM94, each carrying 10 ECTS. Together they are the 30 ECTS Master’s thesis. When checking a study plan, use all three thesis parts. Do not substitute a thesis code from another health-sciences programme and do not infer a 40 ECTS thesis from the Scientific Specialisation total.

4. VV00CM91 is a separate 10 ECTS Thesis seminar

VV00CM91 Thesis seminar, 10 ECTS is a separate required course. It is not embedded invisibly inside the three thesis parts. The seminar develops research readiness, scientific discussion, argumentation, presentation and peer-review skills while the thesis is being written. For APN, the correct current statement is 30 ECTS thesis + 10 ECTS Thesis seminar, not 40 ECTS thesis and not 30 ECTS thesis with an uncredited seminar.

5. The thesis process begins with a bounded research question and a research plan

The thesis and seminar learning outcomes require the student to move from a literature review and an identified knowledge gap to a research aim and research questions within health sciences and the APN profile. If the question, participants, dataset, analysis or permissions change materially later, document the change and discuss it with the supervisor instead of rewriting the history of the project after results are known.

6. Seminar 1 focuses on the research plan

The early seminar stage requires active participation, preparation of the research plan and presentation of that plan in Seminar 1. Students also peer-review another student’s research plan. Use this stage to test whether the research question is answerable, whether the design actually answers it, whether the data can realistically be obtained and whether the planned analysis matches the type of evidence. It is a quality-control opportunity before data collection, extraction or analysis becomes difficult to reverse.

7. Seminar 2 focuses on analysis and preliminary results

The middle stage moves to data analysis and preliminary results, which are presented in Seminar 2. Students peer-review another student’s preliminary results as part of the process. If the preliminary result reveals that the original question was too broad or that a method is not working as planned, narrow the claim rather than forcing the data to support the original expectation.

8. Seminar 3 focuses on the finished thesis

The final seminar stage requires presentation of the finished thesis in Seminar 3 and peer review of another student’s finished work. By this stage, the student should be able to explain not only what was found but why the methodological choices were made, what the evidence can support and what it cannot support. The purpose is not to defend every initial decision as perfect, but to show a scientifically reasoned and transparent research process.

9. The seminar prerequisite text contains a small current-code discrepancy

The current Thesis seminar record names qualitative method and Research Methods I as prerequisites. One public prerequisite line uses the prefix VM00CM90, while the current APN programme tree contains VV00CM90 Qualitative method. This is a minor administrative discrepancy, not a reason to invent a new course requirement. The safe practical interpretation is that the current qualitative-method and Research Methods I preparation should be completed as required by the programme.

10. The thesis-part courses are Pass/Fail, but the final degree thesis is graded 1–5/F

The current Study Guide records VV00CM92, VV00CM93 and VV00CM94 as Pass/Fail course objects. The 10 ECTS Thesis seminar and 0 ECTS Language Response are also Pass/Fail. These are different assessment levels and should not be collapsed. A student may complete the administrative thesis-part course attainments as Pass while the final Master’s thesis receives a numerical degree-thesis grade through formal evaluation.

11. Two thesis evaluators are appointed in the current eGradu process

Current eGradu instructions state that the Head of Department, or an appointed person, appoints two thesis evaluators after the thesis has passed the plagiarism-control stage and formal evaluation can begin. The evaluators receive the thesis and the applicable assessment criteria. They have a 20-working-day window to provide two separate statements or one joint statement together with a thesis grade proposal. The evaluation statements are also communicated through the current Educational Service process.

12. Health Sciences has a live assessment-matrix transition, so verify the current matrix

The eGradu evaluation page contains an important transition note: Health Sciences and Social Sciences previously connected to FPV should check which assessment criteria apply. That means a current APN guide should not freeze an older FPV assessment matrix as universally controlling. The exact current assessment matrix is cycle-sensitive. Before final submission, confirm the matrix or evaluation form that Educational Service and the responsible unit currently require.

13. The supervisor normally gives final clearance before formal evaluation

Current eGradu guidance says the supervisor makes a final review of the manuscript and normally gives permission for it to be submitted for assessment. The supervision process ends when the thesis is submitted for plagiarism control and formal evaluation. This exception should not be treated as a normal shortcut. In ordinary planning, schedule enough time for supervisor review before the formal submission is triggered.

14. Language response is a separate mandatory quality-control step

The current APN programme tree includes CS00CN20 Language Response for Master’s Thesis, 0 ECTS. Åbo Akademi uses language response to support the quality of Master’s theses written in Swedish or English. The language-response object is Pass/Fail and should be kept separate from subject evaluation. Plan language response early enough that it does not become an unexpected delay immediately before final submission.

15. The maturity-test process changed from 1 September 2025

Students should be careful with older Åbo Akademi instructions about the maturity test. From 1 September 2025, the university moved away from using the thesis itself as the linguistic maturity examination and introduced separate maturity examinations in the Exam system. The supervisor is involved in arranging and assessing the subject content of the maturity examination. The exact language consequences depend on the student’s previous schooling and degree background. Confirm the current individual route when planning graduation.

16. International-programme language rules do not remove individual maturity requirements

The programme is taught in English, and current degree instructions allow theses in the language of an international Master’s programme. Students educated abroad or with a schooling language other than Swedish or Finnish may also fall under different statutory language-demonstration rules than students educated in Finland. The correct approach is to separate three issues: the thesis language, language response for the thesis, and the individual maturity examination/language demonstration required for the degree.

17. APN provides strong qualitative-method preparation, but the thesis is not automatically qualitative

VV00CM90 Qualitative method, 5 ECTS provides substantial preparation in qualitative research design, sampling, data collection, analysis, interpretation, ethics and data management. It also covers qualitative literature reviews such as narrative and scoping reviews. This makes qualitative research a well-supported route within APN. It does not establish that every Master’s thesis must be qualitative. A review, interview study, observational quantitative analysis or mixed-method project has different requirements and different limits on inference.

18. Research Methods I broadens the methods environment

TL00CG12 Research Methods I, 5 ECTS explicitly introduces quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method research. It covers research terminology, ethics, literature reviewing, qualitative analysis and basic statistical analysis. It also introduces NVivo and SPSS. These tools are part of the methods environment, not compulsory software for every thesis. The methodological justification belongs in the thesis; a software name should never substitute for explaining how data were prepared, analysed and interpreted.

19. Match qualitative analysis to the question and data

Research Methods I introduces content analysis, thematic analysis and interpretative phenomenological analysis, while the qualitative-method course develops broader design and quality reasoning. These methods are not interchangeable labels. A thematic analysis of interview data asks different analytical questions from an interpretative phenomenological analysis, and a structured qualitative content analysis may use different coding and abstraction logic. Themes should remain traceable to evidence rather than becoming unsupported summaries.

20. Literature reviews need a declared review design

The qualitative-method curriculum includes narrative reviews and scoping reviews and references reporting frameworks including PRISMA and PRISMA-ScR. If the thesis is a literature-based study, define the review type before searching. Explain databases, search terms, dates, inclusion and exclusion rules, screening and data extraction. Using PRISMA-style reporting can improve transparency, but a checklist cannot correct a weak search strategy, selective inclusion or claims that go beyond the included evidence.

21. Quantitative analysis begins with the data structure, not the software menu

Research Methods I introduces descriptive statistics, correlations and t-tests, but an individual thesis should choose analysis after defining the outcome, independent units, repeated observations, missingness and comparison structure. A p-value does not by itself show clinical importance. Report analysed sample size, exclusions and relevant effect estimates or uncertainty where appropriate. SPSS can execute a test, but the student remains responsible for whether the test answers the research question.

22. Mixed-method research requires explicit integration

A mixed-method thesis is more than collecting one qualitative and one quantitative dataset. Define what each strand contributes, when the strands are connected and how the combined interpretation is produced. For example, interview data may help explain a pattern found in service data, while quantitative measures may show how common a phenomenon is in a defined sample. Integration should answer a clear research purpose.

23. Theory of science should shape method choices, not remain a detached chapter

VV00BK85 Theory of science, philosophy and methodology covers ontology, epistemology, methodology, ethos, truth and evidence. In the thesis, this becomes useful when philosophical assumptions affect what can be known and how evidence is interpreted. Explain philosophical positioning when it materially informs the design, but avoid adding abstract terminology that has no relationship to data collection or analysis.

24. Clinical APN content is disciplinary context, not automatic research authority

The degree also contains physical health assessment, pharmacology, pathophysiology, care and treatment, and clinical-practice studies. These courses help students formulate clinically meaningful questions and interpret advanced-practice contexts. They do not automatically authorise a student to diagnose, prescribe, recruit patients, alter treatment or conduct an intervention for thesis research. A clinical-practice placement is also not automatically a research site. Research activity requires the appropriate supervisor-approved design, organisational access, ethical route and data-protection basis.

25. Separate association, experience and intervention claims

APN topics can easily sound causal because they concern healthcare outcomes. Keep the wording aligned with the design. Interviews can support bounded interpretations of participants’ experiences or perceptions. An observational dataset can show associations within the studied population and measurement context. A before-after service evaluation may still have confounding and secular-trend limitations. A thesis can be valuable without using stronger language than its evidence allows.

26. Ethics requirements depend on the actual project

Åbo Akademi has university research-ethics governance through its Board for Research Ethics and Research Ethics Committee, and the university follows Finnish responsible-conduct guidance. However, not every APN thesis automatically needs the same ethics review. Resolve the ethical route before the relevant recruitment, data collection or intervention begins. Do not treat ethics as a paragraph written after the research is completed.

A healthcare organisation may permit access to a setting or dataset, but that permission does not automatically replace participant consent, ethical pre-assessment or a lawful basis for processing personal data. Conversely, an ethics statement does not automatically grant access to a hospital database. Map each approval to what it authorises. This is especially important for small clinical groups and sensitive health information.

28. Prepare the data management plan before starting the study

The thesis/seminar learning outcomes explicitly include a DMP, and Åbo Akademi’s research-data guidance says data management should be planned before a research project or study begins. The DMP should cover the data lifecycle: collection or receipt, storage, access, documentation, analysis, sharing where appropriate, retention or archiving and secure disposal. Research materials should be as open as possible and as closed as necessary, respecting ethical, legal and contractual restrictions.

29. Personal data require purpose, minimisation and security

Åbo Akademi processes personal data under GDPR and requires a legal basis for processing. Collect only the information needed for the stated research purpose. Plan access rights, secure storage, transfer, pseudonymisation or anonymisation and retention before analysis starts. The thesis should expose only information that is appropriate for the assessed and potentially public document.

30. Keep source data, analytical decisions and public reporting separate

A defensible thesis should preserve enough provenance to show how the final result was produced. Keep the source dataset or material under its approved access conditions, maintain a transparent record of cleaning, coding, exclusions or transformations, and preserve the version of the analysis used for final tables and figures. Confidential patient, staff, organisational or partner information should not be inserted into the manuscript merely because the file is submitted through a university system.

31. Current AI rules require transparency and data protection

Åbo Akademi’s current AI procedure requires responsible and transparent AI use in research and studies. If AI materially supports a Master’s thesis, the student should describe which tool was used and for what purpose. AI tools are not authors, and the student remains responsible for accuracy and integrity. This is particularly important for patient information, confidential organisational data, unpublished results and other restricted APN research material.

32. AI cannot replace the thesis or the original sources

Current university procedure states that AI should not generate the final submitted work or a thesis from the ground up. AI outputs also are not references. If an AI tool suggests literature, a method, code or interpretation, verify it against the original source or controlled analysis. An apparently fluent AI-generated paragraph does not demonstrate evidence quality, and an AI-generated statistical explanation does not make an incorrect analysis valid.

33. Turnitin is the current originality-control system

Current eGradu guidance uses Turnitin through Moodle for the final plagiarism check. The supervisor checks the similarity report and, after successful plagiarism control, forwards the thesis to subject evaluation. The current university regulation also requires software-based plagiarism checking for degree theses. Treat Turnitin as an originality and source-use control. It does not validate study design, ethics, data quality, statistical assumptions or qualitative interpretation. Correct citation and transparent authorship remain necessary regardless of the similarity percentage.

34. Final submission starts the formal assessment process

Before formal submission, the supervisor normally performs the final manuscript review. The student then submits the thesis for plagiarism control according to the current eGradu instructions and completes the electronic-publication form. The final thesis is submitted as one document and should be prepared in PDF/A format. Therefore, complete the scientific, language, citation, privacy and formatting audit before triggering final submission.

35. eGradu connects evaluation, assessment and library publication

The current electronic process connects plagiarism control, thesis evaluation, Educational Service, Head of Department assessment and library publication. After the evaluators submit their statements and grade proposal, the current eGradu overview says the thesis is assessed by the Head of Department. Because organisational roles and forms can change, recheck eGradu immediately before submission rather than relying on a screenshot or instructions saved early in the thesis year.

36. Confidential material needs a deliberate thesis-publication design

Current eGradu instructions include a route for theses containing confidential material, and external evaluators may need an NDA. This does not mean the entire thesis can be treated as a private working file. Decide early what belongs in the public/assessed thesis and what must remain in controlled source material or a confidential appendix handled under current rules. If confidentiality affects method description or reproducibility, explain the limitation without disclosing the protected material itself.

37. Run a final evidence audit before manuscript freeze

Before final submission, trace each strong conclusion back to the research question, actual data or literature, analysis and permitted level of inference. Check whether qualitative interpretations remain grounded in source material, whether quantitative denominators and exclusions are visible, whether a review conclusion matches the included evidence, and whether mixed-method integration is explicit. Keep null, negative and inconvenient findings visible. Scientific quality improves when the conclusion is narrower but fully supported rather than broad and weakly evidenced.

38. Final APN thesis checklist

Confirm the current FPV2025APN / programme 34407 curriculum and your personal study plan. Treat the thesis as 30 ECTS across VV00CM92, VV00CM93 and VV00CM94, plus the separate 10 ECTS VV00CM91 Thesis seminar and 0 ECTS CS00CN20 Language Response. Before final submission, verify the current Health Sciences assessment matrix, individual maturity-test route, ethics/permissions, DMP, personal-data controls, AI disclosure, language response, Turnitin, PDF/A/eGradu submission and the two-evaluator assessment process.
