How to structure a clear thesis defence presentation
A practical 10–12 minute slide structure covering the problem, gap, method, results, contribution and Q&A.
A defence presentation should not repeat every chapter. It should tell a clear story: what problem you studied, how you studied it, what you found and why it matters.
Recommended slide flow
- Title and research context.
- Problem statement.
- Research gap.
- Aim, objectives and questions.
- Conceptual or theoretical framework.
- Methodology.
- Key findings.
- Discussion.
- Contribution and implications.
- Limitations and future research.
- Conclusion.
- Questions.
One message per slide
A slide should communicate one main point. Avoid copying paragraphs from the thesis. Use short phrases, diagrams, tables and figures that can be understood quickly.
Choose only the strongest results
Do not show every table. Select the results that directly answer the research questions. Explain what each result means instead of reading numbers from the screen.
Prepare a short opening
Your first 30 seconds should explain:
- the topic;
- the central problem;
- the study context;
- why the audience should care.
Prepare for Q&A
Create answers for:
- Why did you choose this topic?
- Why did you choose this method?
- What is the main contribution?
- What are the limitations?
- What would you change if you repeated the study?
- How can the findings be applied?
Rehearse with a timer
Complete at least two full practice runs. The second run should include interruptions and questions. Remove slides or details that make the presentation exceed the available time.
